Exponential Growth: Record-breaking Increase in CCWs Nationwide

October 20th 2021. In the past 12 months, 2,000,000 Americans have obtained concealed carry permits. This is a 10% increase since 2020 and 48% more than 2016. According to the Crime Prevention Research Center, (CRPC), this is a record number of Americans obtaining CCW permits. The previous high was 1.8 million permits in 2017. This year’s 2 million permits represents the largest one-year increase. According to the CRPC, the number of CCW permits increased “exponentially” over the past year. Guns America Digest reports that a record number of Americans have purchased firearms since the COVID-19 pandemic. The CPRC’s latest data suggests that these same individuals also sought concealed carry permits. This is especially remarkable when you consider the number of states that allow permit-less or ‘constitutional” carry. 21 states have eliminated the requirement for a permit to carry concealed firearms. Based on future legal decisions, we may see significant expansion of permit. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear the N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Association V. Corlett Case, which challenges NY state laws that restrict the right to carry. Guns America stated that a favorable ruling for pro-2A could lead states to issue permits to all qualified applicants. Why the big increase in concealed carry permits
There are many reasons why CCW permits are being issued at record levels in 2021. The economy is in turmoil, crime is rising, and border security is deteriorating. In 2021, there will be an estimated 2,000,000 illegal aliens entering the country (full-year number). The permit agencies are also catching up with CCW license applications that were submitted at the height of the Pandemic. The timing is part of the reason for an increase in CCW permits. Many states and cities have slowed or stopped issuing CCW permits due to the COVID Pandemic. These same permitting agencies are currently processing a large backlog of permit applications. Guns America reports that there has been a’surge in states that have only recently reopened their permit offices. There have been significant increases of serious crime in major cities across the country, especially in “Blue States”, which are Democrat Party-governed. The FBI reported a 29% increase in homicides for the entire nation last year. This was the largest single-year increase in homicides ever recorded.
