Widener’s Guide To Smokeless Powders also includes a helpful discussion on Burn Rate, which is a confusing topic for many hand-loaders. Wideners explains that while a gun powder explosion may seem instantaneous, you can slow it down to find that each powder has its own ‘burn rate’ or the speed at which it ignites. This video shows powders that have very different burn rates. Pay attention. Different cartridge types require different burn rates. Widener’s says: “Generally, a fast-burning powder can be used for light bullets, low-speed pistols, and shotguns. For magnum pistols, medium-rate powders will be used, while large bore cartridges with high velocity will require slow powders [. Burn rate is not a standard unit of measurement. Burn rate is only discussed in relation to other powders, there is no universal yardstick. Specifications will vary by cartridge and bullet type
