He was also an author. Keith was instrumental in the creation of the first magnum revolver cartridge, a.357 Magnum. He also helped to develop the.44 Magnum Magnum and later.41 Magnum cartridges. Roy G. Jinks referred to Keith as “the father big bore handgunning.” These videos tell Keith’s story and show his influence on the design modern Magnum cartridges. Edward James “Jim”, a famed hunter, used the legendary “Corbett Tiger Rifle”, which is a Jeffery boxlock.450/400. This rifle was featured by Corbett in his book Man-Eaters of Kumaon. Two of the man-eating Tigers Corbett hunted are believed to have killed more than 800 people in the Kumaon Hills, India. Lot 1060: Colt SAA No. 5.44 Special “The last word in Sixguns” (Sold at $80,500.00).
The famous revolver was originally a Colt SAA. However, it was modified extensively. The top strap of this revolver was welded into a flat-top target configuration. An adjustable rear sight was also added. A Bisley-type target spur was added to the hammer. The Number Five’s unique grip was created by combining a modified Bisley backstrap with a Single Action Army trigger guard. Keith called this his most famous pistol. This is one of the most beautiful Winchester model 70s ever made. This rifle was listed as “Pachmayar Custom 70.375 H&H With Full Coverage Engraving & Exhibition Wood” at the Elmer Keith Estate Collection auction. It sold for $22,425.00. Look at that figure!
