Newsweek was recently informed by the anti-gun Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence that accidental shootings are one the most common causes for death in America and kill almost 500 people each year. This is a complete lie. Every year, accidental gun deaths are very low in the U.S. RELATED STORY The NSSF Survey shows that accidental gun deaths are very high in the United States. In 2020’s causes of death, the only ones that are more common than heart disease, cancer, or Covid-19 are heart disease and cancer. The 500 accidental gun deaths represent a small fraction of the 200,000 deaths that occur each year. They make up only a quarter of all deaths. It is not surprising that gun-ban groups and antigun politicians continue to blather about firearm accidents. It doesn’t stop so-called mainstream media outlets printing lies without hesitation. It’s not difficult to find the figures online, but it’s still possible to verify them. Many media outlets want to bring these rare accidental firearm deaths to the forefront of attention at all costs. CBS news was able to list gun deaths in a recent news story. They even went as far as number 59, which is ironically where accidental firearm deaths rank. They headlined the story “Death index”: Top 59 ways Americans Die. It’s easy to imagine a CBS editor looking through a Top 50 death story and realizing that accidental firearm deaths didn’t make it on the list. Then instructing the “reporter” to keep the list updated for as long as it takes to include gun accidents. More prominent accidental fatalities: The accidental death rate is higher than accidental firearm deaths. This will result in over 93,000 deaths in 2020. This is 186 times more accidental deaths than those caused by firearms accidents in the same year. While media reports may occasionally mention the phenomenon, many people are in favor of legalizing more drug usage, rather than limiting it. Accidental gun deaths are much more common than fatal vehicle accidents. The number of fatalities from vehicle accidents has risen to more than 40,000 per year over the past few years, despite fewer people traveling due to Covid. This means that the average American is 80x more likely to die in a car accident than in a firearms accident. Are there any recent headlines calling for the ban on high-capacity sedans in America? The often-repeated media statement that “Firearms now death more people than vehicle accidents” is not even a comparison of apples to apples. First, given the rise in vehicular deaths over the past few decades, the statement is untrue. They are referring to all firearm-related deaths, including suicides, murders, and comparing it to car accidents that cause accidental deaths. You can compare accidental vehicle deaths and firearm accidents to get a better idea. This equates to approximately 1.2 accidental gun deaths per 100 vehicle deaths. Unusual Causes of Accidental Death. Most people don’t realize that 34 times more Americans die each day from accidental falls than firearm accidents. According to the latest statistics, around 17,000 people are killed each year from such accidents. I haven’t seen any media outlets calling for a reduction in this number. It is also very dangerous to go to work. In 2020, there were 4,764 work-related fatalities. That means that one person died for every 111 minutes. This is nine times more than accidental firearm deaths. Yet, media don’t report it as an epidemic. Another fatality is drowning. Each year, approximately 4,000 Americans drown in the United States. This is eight times more than those who are killed in firearm accidents. You don’t often see headlines about a “drowning pandemic” or legislation restricting swimming pool ownership. It’s a long way from the top. To reach firearm accidents, you must go down the list of accidental deaths. While it would be nice for mainstream media to report this fact, it is unlikely that we will ever see it happen. Even one accidental firearm death is too many. Over the past decades, organizations such as the National Rifle Association have educated millions upon millions of Americans about gun safety and continue to do so every day. Many other organizations do the same. Bottom line: It is a dangerous world. Despite what the media may have you believe, it is much less likely to be killed in a firearm-related accident than in other accidental ways to die.
