HMR for Prairie Dog Safaris on August 8th 202317 — Effective at Shorter RangesWe are aware that many of our readers love Prairie Dog varminting Safaris. You’ll need a centerfire for long P-Dogs. We like the 20 Practical for an AR and a BR/BRA 22 in a bolt action. This will cover you out to 700 yards. For shorter shots, say within 150 yards, it is better to use a 17 HMR rimfire rifle. The 17 HMRs of today are capable to surprising accuracy. They can rival a good centerfire rifle, but with less recoil and a lower cost per shot. The 17 HMR can reach speeds of up to 2650 fps when using a 17-grain cartridge. Dustin Ellerman, former Top Shot Champion, is a fan of Volquartsens. CCI ammo has shown outstanding accuracy in one of his 17 HMR rimfire Varmint Rigs. Dustin posted on his Facebook page a few seasons ago: “Prepping prairie dogs and I am floored by the cold, sub-half inch group shot with Volquartsen’s Custom 17 HMR. This thumbhole-stock gun features a Bowers Group USS Suppressor and a 3-12x56mm Meopta Scope. Dustin tried several different types of CCI HMR 17 ammo. This small group of prairie dogs was shot using CCI A17 ammunition. You may be surprised. Dustin took a Volquartsen HMR in Wyoming in 2015. He was impressed by the rifle (shown above) and the small rimfire cartridge.
