May 3, 202217 HMR Prairie Dog Adventures — Great for Closer RangesWe are approaching peak Prairie Dog season. A centerfire is a must for long shots. We like the 20 Practical in an AR, and the 22 BR/BRA/BRA in a bolt action. This will allow you to cover up to 700 yards. For shots of small critters, such as those within 150 yards, it is a good idea to have a 17 HMR rimfire system. The 17 HMRs of today are capable of astonishing accuracy. They can match a good centerfire rig but have a lower recoil and cost per shot. The 17 HMR has twice the velocity of a.22 LR, up to 2650 fps using a 17-grain bullet. Top Shot champion Dustin Ellerman loves his Volquartsens and we can see why. He’s had great success with CCI ammo using one of his 17 HMR rimfire rifle varmint rigs. Dustin wrote a few seasons ago on his Facebook page: “Preparing for prairie dogs and I’m stunned by this sub-half-inch group shot at 100 yards with the Volquartsen 17 HMR. This thumbhole-stock rifle comes with a Bowers Group USS suppressor and a 3-12x56mm Meopta Scope. Dustin tried several types of CCI 17HMR ammo. This small group was shot using CCI A17 ammo. What is the effective range of a 17 HMR for prairie dogs? You might be surprised. Dustin took another Volquartsen17 HMR on a Prairie Dog hunt through Wyoming in 2015. The rifle (shown below), and the small rimfire cartridge impressed Dustin. Dustin was a huge fan of the 17 HMR cartridge after the 2015 P-Dog Expedition. The 17 HMR is a great choice for prairie dogs. This video shows a successful Prairie Dog hunt with Savage A17. You’ll see hits at 160 yards (00.50), which is the effective range for the 17 HMR cartridge. The host is using a Savage A17 semiauto 17 HMR rifle with a Boyds laminated barrel.
