.22 Creedmoor LOAD DATA from Peterson Cartridge

Peterson Cartridge Company (Peterson) has released a comprehensive guide to the 22 Creedmoor, a wildcat cartridge based on 6.5 Creedmoor, or 6mm Creedmoor, necked down into.224. We think that the.22 Creedmoor cartridge would make a great long range varmint round, similar to the.22250 Rem, with a modern, efficient cartridge. Some PRS/NRL shooters may also choose the.22 Creedmoor, as it is less recoiling and flatter shooting than the 6mm Creedmoor. Match bullets in.224 caliber are usually less expensive than heavier projectiles such as 6mm or 6.5mm. What’s not to love? Less recoil and less cost. *

Peterson says, “Since it was introduced in 2007, the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge has seen a pretty meteoric rise in popularity.” As of this writing, the cartridge is still growing in popularity among hunters and shooters. The number of wildcats has increased as the 6.5 Creedmoor cartridge has grown in popularity. Wildcat cartridges that are popular include the 6mm Creedmoor and the.25 Creedmoor. The.22 Creedmoor is the latest. This data sheet will cover.22 Creedmoor.
We decided to distribute this Data Sheet as a way to help our customers and anyone else who shoots the.22 Creedmoor cartridge. In this LOAD DATA document, you will find four (4) bullets and four (4) rifle powders that are commonly used to handload the.22 Creedmoor. Then we loaded the different combinations of bullets and powders up to the SAAMI Maximum average pressure (MAP) for 6.5 Creedmoor or 6mm Creedmoor, which is 62,000PSI. Our goal was to offer a range of bullet weights, and the powders that were used with them.
Our ballistician collected all of the data below in our indoor ballistics laboratory located in our Pennsylvania factory. We have not tested these loads to ensure accuracy, even though we were able gather pressure and velocity information in our lab. These loads are designed to inform shooters of the maximum pressure that a bullet and powder combination will produce at 62,000 psi.

Important: Cartridge overall lengths (COAL) can affect pressures in a significant way. Changing any component of the load — primers or bullets, brass or powder — can also affect pressure. Load conservatively. Due to differences in bore diameter, some barrels will show higher pressures. Always start with conservative loads that are well below MAX.

*In actuality, there IS a potential downside – reduced barrel life. We expect a.22 Creedmoor with hot varmint loads to have a shorter barrel life than a Creedmoor 6.5. This is based on our observations with.22250 and.22250 Ackley barrels compared with our 6.5 CM.
