40 vs. 45: It’s time to settle the Big-Bore Auto Debate

Close Since the introduction of the 40 S&W cartridge, shooters have debated which one is better: the 40 or the 45 ACP. Both cartridges do the same thing, so it makes sense. Let’s look at the pros and cons between.40 S&W and.45 ACP. RELATED STORY 10 Tips for Improving Your Shooting at the Range 4 1 vs 45: Does It Even Matter? Let’s start with the good news: it doesn’t. The myth of handgun stopping power is not true. Modern, well-made defensive ammunition is no longer a debate. Take a look at the data for Speer Gold Dot. For the 40 S&W, there’s a 180-grain Gold Dot and a 185-grain Gold Dot. Both meet the FBI minimum penetration standards and expand to more than 0.60 inches in independent ballistic testing. After defeating 4 layer denim, that’s the result. The results don’t change if you increase or decrease the bullet weight. The Federal HST of 230 grains in 45 expands slightly more than the 155 grain HST of 40, but that’s all. The difference in diameter between the 45 ACP and the 40 S&W bullets is less than 0.05, despite the fact that the 45 ACP has a larger bullet diameter. There is no debate about the bottom line. Vaya con dios, amiga. This article would be too long so let’s get to it. The 40 S&W Should Be Picked Because It Holds More Rounds. The main argument for the smaller round in the 40/45 debate is that 40 S&W can hold more rounds in pistols similar in size. A single stack 1911 can hold 8 rounds of 45 ACP, but it can also hold 10 rounds of 40 in a magazine that is still concealable. This one is clearly a win for the 40 S&W over 45 ACP. It’s always better to have more ammunition, right? The 45 ACP is the best choice because it’s easier to shoot. This was the author’s personal carry gun for one year. I have shot a lot of both. I shot 13,000+ rounds 45 ACP through a variety of semi-auto platforms over a three-year period. The majority of these were Glock 21s. I also shot approximately 7,000 rounds 40 S&W over the same time period. Most of these were through Glocks. I can confirm that I enjoyed shooting 45 ACP more. Many shooters agree that the 45 ACP’s recoil is more pleasant than the 40 S&W’s, especially in polymer-framed pistols. The 4 0 vs. 45 Debate is a Silly Debate. You Should Get A 9mm Pistol. Of course, if you think that 45 S&W is more enjoyable to shoot than 45 ACP, and that 40 holds more rounds than 45, then a 9mm is the best choice. It is easier to shoot than any of the calibers and holds more rounds than either. If you are really interested in this discussion, we will make a recommendation. Editor’s Choice: 40 S&W This one seems to make sense, at least to my eyes. First, 40 S&W is more effective. Second, 40 S&W is as easy to shoot as 45 ACP if you choose carefully. Federal’s 205-grain Syntech Action Pistol rounds are a good example. Finally, because law enforcement agencies in America switched to 9mm, there are tons of high-quality, affordable 40 S&W semiautos on the secondary market. A police trade-in Gen 3 Glock 22 gun is a great weapon, especially considering the current prices. However, I will not trade in a Gen 3 Glock 22 if it is 40 vs. 45.
