A gun empty is useless: Mastering speed reloads

Reloading a defensive handgun is a common skill. This skill is something that all of the defensive handgun training courses I have taken spend a lot of time teaching. This is because an empty gun is almost useless. The majority of doctrine divides reloading into three methods. These are the tactical reload, speed reload, and administrative reload. All three have the same purpose: to keep your handgun loaded with ammunition. However, they serve different purposes. It’s better to handle an empty handgun when you’re either moving or utilizing cover.Administrative ReloadsAdministrative reloading is something that has no tactical value. It is a set of administrative steps that you take when you prepare your pistol for carry or when you are at the range to train your pistol. However, you will often see it used during handgun course handgun training when students take a break to load magazines and take a break. Shooters will often take a magazine out of a holstered gun and then top it off and re-insert it. They may also be standing on the line adjusting the ammunition in magazines and the magazine inside the pistol to prepare them for a drill or exercise. After completing an exercise or drill at the range, you will need to conduct a tactical load to ensure that your handgun is fully loaded. An administrative reload should only ever be used to establish a drill, training or safety requirement. It is recommended that you perform a tactical reload when there is a lull in your action. Although I don’t know how to define “a lull” exactly, I do know that you should conduct a tactical load during a lull. Because of the chaos surrounding self-defense shooting, it’s almost impossible to give any clear and concise rules. Consider it this way: If you have to conduct a tactical reload because your ammunition supply is low, and you have the time to keep the magazine in the gun, then you can do so. A speed reload is better for other reasons. Once you have solved the immediate problem, you can reload your gun quickly with speed reloads. You might have exhausted a lot of your on-board ammunition, and need to get more ammunition in order to withstand the imminent doom. You may need to reload because you have exhausted all of your ammunition and are in urgent need of more ammo. The speed reload can also be performed if your handgun isn’t working properly. When performing a speed load, it is recommended that you bring the handgun back into your workspace. You should hold it high enough to see the threat and then see the process of inserting the new magazine. This makes sense if you’re standing in front of a threat while trying to reload–but standing in front of a threat while trying to reload makes no sense.Conducting a speed reload while moving or utilizing cover does make sense.Regardless of the particulars associated with the speed reload, the primary directive is to get the gun reloaded as fast as possible.Reloading can be practiced with dummy rounds at times when you can’t go to the range and utilize live ammo.Additional ConsiderationsIdeally, when you utilize any method to reload a pistol, you should take the time to verify that the reload was conducted properly. You should conduct a press check to visually or tactilely verify that a cartridge has been inserted into the chamber and that the magazine is properly seated. It’s possible to not do this if you are doing a speed reload. However, it is essential that you place the partially loaded magazine that was removed form the handgun. It should not be stored in your primary ammunition pouch, or other storage area unless it is the last remaining magazine. You might accidentally grab what you believe is a full magazine and end up reaching for the partially used one. You might reach for the partially-expensive magazine, only to find it is missing.
