Ammo Brief: 9mm Steyr

The 9mm Steyr cartridge is the standard Austrian military gun cartridge for the Steyr Model 1912 automatic pistol. The case of the 9mm Steyr is 23 millimeters in length, compared to 19 millimeters for the 9mm Luger. This cartridge is similar to the 9mm Bergmann-Bayard and often confused with it. The 9mm Steyr ammunition comes with a nickel-plated bullet. The 9mm Bayard is slightly longer. Quantities of 9mm Steyr pistols have appeared on the United States surplus military market and, for a while, ammunition was readily available. This is an excerpt from Cartridge’s Of The World, available now at GunDigestStore.com.General CommentsThe 9mm Steyr is quite similar to the 9mm Bayard. Other pistols, however, will not. The Astra Model 400 can handle both cartridges. The 9mm Steyr cartridge is similar to the.38 Colt Automatic. It is a good, reliable field cartridge. The Steyr pistol will accept any standard load for either the 9mm Luger, or the.38 Automatic. The Fiocchi company in Italy still loads the round.
