The past two years have seen gun sales like never before. It’s not just Red States. The totals also include large numbers from Blue states, which have some of the most restrictive gun control laws in America. With the midterm elections just 10 months away, elected officials who support more gun control may be in for a rude awakening. This is due to the shifting Second Amendment support in their voting constituencies. RELATED STORY NICS Background checks for 2021 show sustained pro-gun support Gun control sparks gun sale blue wave and possible disaster for Dems during midterm elections. Law-abiding Americans took full control of their personal safety and Second Amendment rights in 2020. They were able to record 21 million background checks on gun sales. This number dropped only slightly to 18.5 million in 2021. These numbers include more than 8.4 millions first-time gun purchasers in 2020 and more that 3.2 million in 2021’s first half. However, the processing of National Instant Criminal Background Checks (NICS) verifications was not limited to red states that favor Second Amendment. The largest figures for the past 12 months were posted by blue states, which are often home to strict gun control laws. Two of the seven states that processed over one million NICS checks last year had Democratic governors, Democratic state legislatures, and strict gun control laws. According to NSSF’s adjusted FBI NICS data in 2021, Illinois was the most processed state for background checks. More than 8.4 million checks were processed in the past year. This figure does not include checks that were run and rerun for Illinois Firearm Ownership ID (FOID) cards. The total also includes Concealed Carry Licenses. California was next with almost 1.5 million checks. Nearly 13,000 NICS checks were run in Washington, D.C., the nation’s capital, for firearm transfers. This number is more than 11,000 for 2020’s buying spree. This compares to the 6,000 who were alive in 2019 before COVID shutdowns. Riots and calls for defunding police increased. Pro-Gun Support Hits Small Blue States. Even smaller Blue states experienced high scores, based on their population. Connecticut had more than 277,000 background checks. That’s the highest number since 2016’s 316,000 checks when the prospects of an antigun Democratic-controlled White House were possible. Holly Sullivan stated that while lawmakers will often refer to Connecticut as the pinnacle for gun control, Connecticut residents aren’t safe in their communities. She is a member of the Connecticut Citizens Defense League, which saw its membership increase by 40% to 43,000 in the past two year. “Connecticut residents continue proving they want firearm access in a state with a Democratic governor and state legislator,” Sullivan said. These sentiments resonate from one sea to the next. P.J. The Latino Rifle Association was founded by Gomez and has attracted several hundred members. “I don’t believe self-defense…should be exclusive to people on the right politically,” Gomez said. New Reality Gun control groups saw the potential for a President Joe Biden administration, Democratic control of Congress and a year ago they squeaked at the chance to pass more federal gun control. They were quickly dismayed by the American people’s views. New data shows that a clear majority of self-described Democrats – 52 percent – either own a firearm personally or live in a household that has one. National polling repeatedly shows gun control losing support. This new reality was quickly realized as a stopper against federal gun control efforts. After he failed to persuade all U.S. Senate Democrats, President Biden had to pull two prominent nominees, including David Chipman, a paid gun control lobbyist, to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Saule Omarova was the other, and she testified that she would not rule out another Operation Choke Point. Before she was withdrawn from consideration, she was nominated to be Comptroller for the Currency. Gun control legislation has been a miss as Americans reject any Congressional action. Gun control groups from all walks of the spectrum have voiced disappointment at their inability to impose additional gun control restrictions, while still ignoring criminals who are responsible for the rise in gun violence. Americans continue to ignore them and go to their local firearm retailers to purchase new guns. “Elections have Consequences” Gun control advocates are receiving a taste of the American people’s medicine. This includes decisions made by local councils and the White House. It’s a bitter pill that they don’t want to swallow. Law-abiding Americans are now able to purchase a firearm legally after they have pushed policies that have made neighborhoods less secure. Ten months are left before the midterm elections and candidates have already made their positions on gun control known. #GUNVOTE(r), a campaign by the NSSF to inform voters about candidates’ positions on Second Amendment issues, so they don’t risk their rights at polls, was launched by #NSSF.
