BarrelCool, a popular barrel-cooling device, also acts as a safety flag for empty chambers. A fan powered by a small battery cools the barrel’s bore. Yes it really works — manufacturer-provided data shows that BarrelCool significantly reduces the time it takes to cool down a hot barrel. Take a look at the chart to see what you can expect.
People have tried many methods to cool barrels in the past: water flushed through bore, CO2 tanks and even battery-operated fish pumps. BarrelCool is simpler, cheaper, and more convenient than other options. This small device, which costs only $39.99, can save you time at your range. It can potentially save you money by prolonging barrel life. Barrelcool is demonstrated in the videos below. It works with both bolt-action rifles and AR-type rifles.
BarrelCool Range reports from Forum members. Forum members have been impressed with the BarrelCool device. Terry, a member of the Forum, said that he spends a lot of time waiting for the barrel’s temperature to settle between the shot strings. Today, I fired my usual 50 rounds. It was 85 today. Today, I was able leave the range 30-40 min earlier than usual because of the BarrelCool. It’s great! J-Rod reports that he did some load development for his new rifle. The barrel heating up outside in full sunlight (90?) used to make this take forever. ambient). This little gem took me about two hours of my normal shooting time. I returned home early and my wife was happy.
How and why BarrelCool was invented
BarrelCool was born out of the idea that cease-fire periods were a great time for barrel cooling. Most matches and ranges require that the gun be equipped with empty chamber flags so that everyone on the firing line and the range officer can see that it is safe. The BarrelCool doubles as a cooling device and an indicator for empty chambers.
Bryan Sumoba, the inventor of BarrelCool, explains that previous barrel-cooling methods required additional steps like running patches down the bore or using a fan to block the empty-chamber flag. BarrelCool allows shooters to cool barrels while keeping the empty-chamber flag in their firearm.
Sumoba claims BarrelCool dramatically reduces the time required to cool down hot barrels: “In controlled testing it took approximately half the time to cool it from 140°F to 100°F. Customers also report significant reductions in cooling down hot barrels. One shooter at an F-Class match in Sacramento fired 25 shots from his 7mm RSAUM, and the barrel reached a temperature that was too hot for touch. We put BarrelCool into his firearm and the barrel returned to near-ambient temperatures within 30 minutes.
A BarrelCool unit runs on three (3) CR123A cells and can last for 7-10+ hours. BarrelCool is compatible with both AR-style rifles and most bolt action rifles. BarrelCool’s Hi-Viz yellow color makes it stand out on the firing line. It is small enough that it can be carried in most range bags or gun bags. Barrelcool is made in the USA and can be used by competition, precision, and recreational shooters who need to cool their barrels faster while maintaining a safe firing line. BATTERY TIP – We recommend rechargeable CR123A battery for the BarrelCool. These batteries can last for many years and can be charged at your home or in your vehicle. Keep a spare set in your range bag. Amazon has a 4-pack of C123A lithium batteries with a USB recharger unit for $29.99
