Biofire announced the possible world’s first biometrically secure smart gun. The concept has been around for a long time, so it’s not surprising that a company has finally brought one to market. Biofire is the company behind the product, which appears to be the first commercially available and practical smart gun. The Biofire Smart Gun, unlike the smart guns of science fiction, is protected by biometrics. Gun Digest will keep an eye on the Biofire smart gun to see how it all develops. The company has already released a press release stating its opposition to mandates like the New Jersey law, and its support for freedom of choice and private ownership. It uses “capacitive finger identification and 3D facial recognition” to determine whether the person holding the gun is authorized to fire it. This biometric information is uploaded directly onto the smart gun using either USB or the Smart Dock. It cannot be accessed in any other way, ensuring that your data is safe. The system unlocks quickly and can be fired as a normal gun once it detects a user’s fingerprint (or face), whichever comes first. It is protected by “solid-state, encrypted electronic fire-control technology” to prevent tampering. This is the first handgun that uses “fire-by wire” technology usually used only on fighter jets or missiles. Biofire also claims that the system will work even if a user is wearing gloves or a face cover. The pistol is 9mm, striker fired, and feeds from magazines of 10 or 15 rounds. Preorders for the guns are now open. They can be ordered with left- or right handed configurations, and in a variety of color combinations.
