President Biden announces a new option for the position of Director of ATF. Why not add more gun-grabbing rhetoric to his already topic on the ATF? He announced his latest nominee while also promising further restrictions on so called “ghost guns.” Real Talk: Democrats Blame 3D-Printed Guns for the Increase in Gun Violence. I’m sure that we all remember David Chipman. Biden’s first attempt to place a gun-control advocate in the role of Director of the ATF failed. Due to conflicts of interests, he was unable to make it past moderate Democrats in Congress. It is not surprising that Biden didn’t take the loss as a warning sign. He is now back with Chipman 2.0. U.S. attorney Steve Dettelbach is next on his list. According to the White House press release “Dettelbach is an extremely respected former U.S. attorney and career prosecutor who spent more than two decades as prosecutor at U.S. Department of Justice.” However he may not be as popular with U.S. citizens like he is with D.C. anti gun politicians. It turns out that Dettelbach was unsuccessful in his bid for public office. CNN reports that Dettelbach unsuccessfully ran for Ohio attorney general in 2018. He had previously served as the US attorney in the state. Democrats love finding ways to push through people that U.S. citizens don’t like. If they don’t get the vote, they will appoint them to high-ranking positions. This is democracy. Is Dettelbach a Gun Grabber Yes. Yes, He is. You probably already know a few things you don’t like about Dettelbach if you’re familiar with him. There are many reasons to be concerned about Dettelbach’s nomination. But if you need more, try reading his op-ed “Requiring Universal Background Checks Makes Sense.” Also, Gun Owners of America compiled a list of his 2018 campaign promises, including a host of gun control initiatives: An Assault Weapons BanUniversal Background Registration ChecksGun confiscation for misdemeanor crimesGun confiscation for those dealing with mental health issues”[C]losing” the made up “over the Internet” and fake “gun show loophole[s]”Disarming teachers and keeping schools as “soft targets”Also, according to GOA, “In fact, this US attorney heavily weighed in on the Manchin-Toomey gun control proposal in 2013, condemning ‘[t]he Senate’s failure… to pass the universal background check bill’ as ‘disheartening.'” Although the GOA story reports that Dettelbach stated in the 2013 op-ed mentioned above that federal gun registries are illegal, I won’t hold my breath for him to uphold that. Ghost Gun Busters Biden again uses hyperbole to target ghost gun owners, much like bad political theater. According to the administration, the U.S. Department of Justice has issued a final rule to curb the proliferation of “ghost weapons.” It’s not surprising that the Biden administration is very familiar with inflation. Some might argue that “20,000” is derived from the number firearms reported by Law Enforcement in a criminal investigation. However, while the OIG reports lists firearms used for crimes, the OIG further clarifies that ATF monitoring of 3-D printed firearm technology was primarily based upon firearms seized during criminal investigations. ATF doesn’t have standard procedures to guide how it proactively identifies, evaluates, and monitors 3-D printed firearm technology. However, the new initiative will require serializing so-called “ghost guns” frames and receivers. If you’re willing to violate the law, you can easily register an unregistered firearm. If you don’t want to break the law, your gun will have a serial number that can be traced. Democrats continue to make it harder for law-abiding gun owners, and easier for criminals. The NSSF Responds to the Announcement. A recent press release by the NSSF (National Shooting Sports Foundation), addresses the issue. The full press release is here: NEWTOWN, Conn. — The firearm industry trade association, NSSF, listened closely to President Joe Biden’s nomination of Steve Dettelbach as Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. NSSF has always advocated that the ATF need a U.S. Senate-confirmed Director. This person must be able to faithfully perform the duties of regulating firearm industry in accordance to established laws and regulations. The nominee for this position, which has direct oversight over how law-abiding Americans can exercise their Second Amendment rights, must be a person who is committed to the rule of the law and will not politicize ATF to advance a partisan gun regulation agenda that goes beyond what is written in the U.S. Congress. NSSF will carefully listen to Dettelbach’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee. NSSF is concerned about Dettelbach’s past public statements supporting bans of Modern Sporting Rifles, AR-15 semiautomatic guns, universal background checks, and other restrictions. These are impossible to implement without a national firearm registry. Federal law already prohibits this. Extreme-risk protection orders or “red flag” laws do not provide due process protections. Everytown for Gun Safety also endorsed Dettelbach for his support for Second Amendment rights. The NSSF has made a promise to monitor gun control orders. The Department of Justice (DOJ), in its Final Rule, will redefine frames and receivers. This would drastically alter the sale and possession of personal-made firearms (PFMs), as well as many other types and models. NSSF will carefully review the Final Rule to determine if DOJ listened to the industry’s comments. This rule, as proposed, radically alters manufacturing and compliance processes for traditional firearm manufacturers. It does not only address the production of unfinished parts Congress has chosen not to regulate. I wonder if there is more copy that could help with the passive voice issue.
