It is a gun control list that will only impact law-abiding Americans, as it was expected. The bill was created under the pretense of school safety and includes items that do not prevent mass shootings. RELATED STORY Senate Reaches Bipartisan Gun Control Agreement Over Weekend Senate Releases Final Language for the “BipartisanSafer Communities Act” Spearheaded and authored by Senator John Cornyn, (R-Texas), the Senate voted 64 to 34 Tuesday to move to debate. It is unlikely that the bill will be defeated by the filibuster even though it requires 60 votes. NPR reports that the Senate has voted to approve the bill. According to NPR, “Sens. It also expands the list for people who cannot purchase firearms. The legislation aims to close the “boyfriend loophole” by expanding the definitions of dating relationships. The loose terminology leaves it up to government officials to define what a “dating relationship” means. It is not intended to be a tool for school safety, but it can be used to abuse domestic violence. The ATF actually encourages it. The legislation also increases the background check time for 18- to 20-year-olds from three days up to a maximum of ten. If a legal adult is in a life-threatening situation, they must wait up to ten days before purchasing a firearm for self defense. It could be even longer. Breitbart reports that background checks that begin with an FFL [Federal Firearms Licence] and contact NICS on Monday could last all five days plus Saturday and Sunday. The minimum of twelve days total. NPR reports that the bill would expand background checks for potential gun buyers between 18 and 21 years old. This new process would encourage states to provide access previously sealed juvenile records. It could also increase the waiting period before a purchase can take place. Red flag laws are an integral part of the legislation. This is the most serious part of the bill. This is a huge problem, so we paid it our attention. School Safety This is supposed to be about school safety. Remember school safety? The bill does not address school safety. In the NPR report, “The school provisions include: Creation of a federal clearinghouse on school safety standards to compile best practices and data to make developmentally appropriate recommendations.$1.05 billion for school improvement programs intended to increase attendance and engagement in schools and community learning centers. The bill would prohibit this type of grant from being used for any person with dangerous weapons and training to use them. $1.05 billion for school improvement programs to increase attendance and engagement in schools and community learning centers. $500 million for school-based mental healthcare grants. $500 million for grants to mental professionals development. $28 million for school trauma support. Namely…safety measures. It specifically states that it will not provide any type of armed security (emphasis mine). If you look closely, you can see a weak attempt to address safety issues. Under the pretext of school safety, the bill attempts to include straw man purchases in the legislation. Breitbart reports that straw man purchases are already illegal. They also report that they will not prevent mass shootings. “Breitbart News keeps a running tally over the most high-profile mass killings in the last 15 years. All but three attackers got their guns through background checks. Two of the three attackers who escaped background checks, the Clackamus Town Center attacker on December 11, 2012 and the Sandy Hook attacker on December 14, 2012, stole their guns. No amount of point-of sale gun control would have stopped them. One individual, the Midland, Texas, attacker (August 31, 2019), acquired his gun via a private sale.” Not Well Received Following the release of the bill the NRA (National Rifle Association) sounded the alarm in a tweet: “This legislation can be abused to restrict lawful gun purchases, infringe upon the rights of law-abiding Americans, & use fed dollars to fund gun control measures being adopted by state & local politicians.” https://twitter.com/NRA/status/1539379523145310209 Hopefully, the efforts of the NRA and other organizations like them can help to prevent this bill from passing. It may be a fact, regardless of how we feel about it. This legislation could save lives. I don’t know. It is possible that some elements could be dangerous. It could potentially put lives at risk. I would say that arming law-abiding citizens to combat rising violent crime will almost certainly put many lives at risk. Will the “Bipartisan Safety and Community Act” be a violation of the Bill of Rights? It is obvious. Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today to stay in the loop!
