Bryan Litz explains the Crosswind Weighting factor

Bryan Litz is the founder of Applied Ballistics LLC. He has a very informative Facebook page where he posts regular ballistics information and shooting tips. We recommend that Facebook users visit the Bryan Litz Facebook page. Here’s an interesting example from the page. Bryan analyzes the Crosswind Weighting Factor. The Crosswind Weighting Factor shows where a bullet’s trajectory is most susceptible. Understanding CWF will help shooters better predict the effects of wind on bullet flight, particularly at extreme distances when the projectile is transonic. Crosswind Weighting Factor graphs show bullet trajectory where it is most susceptible to wind.Where does the wind have its greatest effect?

What is the shooter doing?

What is the target?

Halfway? Bryan Litz explains that “out through the supersonic area, the CWF at the shooter is maximum.” As the trajectory moves into transonic, however, the maximum CWF is pushed further away. This is because the longest segments of lag in the bullet’s trajectory occur at transonic, where the drag coefficient is maximum around Mach 1.” [Editor] If your bullet remains fully supersonic throughout its flight to your destination, you can expect the CWF at your shooting position to be the highest. Once the projectile reaches transonic speeds, the situation changes. Bryan Litz Ballistics’ Facebook Page has more tips.
