Cartridge Cutaways — See INSIDE Loaded Munition

August 31st 2021
This is something you won’t see every day: the inside of loaded cartridges, cut halfway through. This allows you to see how the bullet core, jacket and cartridge case, powder, as well as primer, all fit together. FOG Ammunition is responsible for this series of cut-through ammo photos. Here are four cartridges: the.308 Winchester 9mm Luger 300 BLK and.50 BMG. Two more are available at www.FogAmmo.com: the.223 Remington (and.45 ACP).

This.308 Winchester model was different. It only cut the brass case and displayed the entire bullet, primer, and powder load. The powder form was created using a specific amount of powder. A 10% volume was added to the powder form during the forming process. There were also undetermined amounts of air pockets.

This bisection is a 9mm Luger Jacketed hollow point round with flake powder, held together with superglue. After the self-defense round had been cut by a professional, it was polished manually. Although it might look like stick powder these are actually flakes that have been stacked in cross-section. This popular cartridge was created in 1901 by Georg Luger and is used by civilians, soldiers, and law enforcement.

A Dremel tool was used for this model of the.300 AAC Blackout (aka 300BLK) to cut a hole in the bullet and brass case. Super glue was used to attach a measured amount of power, approximately 65% of the spec charge. This cartridge was originally designed for subsonic operation with a suppressor. The powder used is therefore small in relation to the nominal case capacity. This leaves more room to use the.30-caliber bullet.

The.50 Caliber BMG round, also known as the.50 Browning Machine Gun, is last but not least. The.50 Caliber BMG round, which was used in the M2 Machine Gun’s wartime operation, is also used in civil Long Range competitions. A typical.50 BMG cartridge can hold over 225 grains. This is almost ten times more than what you’d find in a NATO round of 5.56×45 NATO. For a comparison of the.50 BMG’s size, see the.223 Rem.
