December 7, 2022CCI began producing Catalyst primers and Catalyst-primed CCI ammunition at its CCI factory in Lewiston. Federal Ammunition, a CCI/Speer partnership company, first developed the Catalyst lead free primer in 2016. Catalyst primers, which are lead-free, are used in CCI-brand pistol ammunition and Speer-brand pistol ammunition. They may be sold separately for reloading purposes. Kat Ainsworth wrote for the MagLife Blog that Federal Ammunition’s proprietary design in the Catalyst is not just lead-free, but also outperforms other methods. The Catalyst primers are safer than lead and offer a host benefits over other lead designs, according to the company. The Catalyst primers have a greater compatibility with modern powders and produce less pressure from gases generated during live flame. They also burn cleaner, which allows them to perform more uniform and complete propellant combustion. The Catalyst primers have very low velocity variation. These primers are also nonhydrophilic which means they don’t attract water molecules such as DDNP-based mixtures found in other brands. ]”Catalyst Primers Promise Best-in-Class Performance
Federal/CCI/Speer President Jason Vanderbrink stated that the new production capability is a great step in the rollout and development of an amazing primer technology. After nearly seven years of continuous production, this product has been a success. Its consistency in performance has been proven over hundreds of millions rounds. The product is also featured in Federal’s new Syntech Range ammo, and American Eagle Lead-Free. The Catalyst primer is extremely clean-burning, resulting in more consistent bullet launch and less velocity variation. It is also nonhydrophilic so it doesn’t attract water molecules such as DDNP-based primers. This results in higher reliability. “Catalyst’s lead-free priming technology ensures the most consistent and clean ignition possible. We are thrilled that our Lewiston plant can now run Catalyst prime in our target pistol products,” said Speer and CCI Director of Factory Operations Mike Overberg. This technology has been proven to be lead-free at the Anoka facility. Our staff has done an amazing job of working across factories to extend the product into Speer ammunition products and CCI Blazer ammunition products in Lewiston, Idaho.
