CMP Plans to Build a Big New Marksmanship Park In Utah

November 3, 2022 The Civilian Marksmanship Program will create a large new shooting range in Payson, Utah south of Salt Lake City. Plans include a long-distance rifle range and an XTC/Mid range zone. There will also be a smallbore (rimfire), range and pistol ranges. Electronic targets will be available at all these ranges. Electronic targets will be available at 800, 1000, and 900 yards in the main long-distance rifle section. ELR enthusiasts will also be able to use K02M-style targets in a second shooting area that extends out to one mile. The CMP West facility will also have an area for PRS/NRL competition. The Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM), approval of the project is still required. However, Utah and the Payson community have been extremely welcoming.
High Power, Service Rifle and Palma matches will be held at the new CMP range in Utah, near Payson. It will not only be an open range with firing line. Other facilities will be included in the new CMP Western Range. It has not yet been given an official name. The new CMP Western Range will include a specific pistol and rimfire range, similar to the Ben Avery Shooting Facility, Phoenix, Arizona. According to CMP personnel, the new Western Range will be a major undertaking, comparable to the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park, Talladega, Alabama.
