The CMP Rimfire Sporter is for smallbore firearms that weigh less than 7 1/2 pounds with sights. Firing takes place at 25 and 50 yard distances in prone, seated, and standing positions in both slow and rapid-fire mode. The CMP offers a special smartphone app that speeds up scoring. Rimfire Sporter games are held across the country as part of the CMP Travel Games.
Each summer, the National Rimfire Sporter Match brings hundreds of shooters along the shores of Lake Erie to Camp Perry. The Rimfire Match at Camp Perry is scheduled for Saturday, July 13, 2020 — only five weeks away. The CMP National Rimfire Sporter Rifle Match is a recreation-oriented match where shooters use smallbore sporter guns with scopes or iron sights. All you need is a.22 LR, sling and ammo.

Rifles can be semi-automatic or manually operated, and are divided into three classes: “O Class”, which is the standard for open-sighted weapons, “T-Class”, for telescope-sighted weapons, and “Tactical Rimfire”. Firing takes place at 50 and 25 yard distances on a target that has a 1.78″ ten-ring. The target is easy enough for a novice to hit but challenging enough that only one competitor has ever shot a perfect 600 in the history.
Rimfire Sporter Course of Fire
The Rimfire Sporter match requires competitors to complete shot sequences in slow fire prone and rapid fire prone positions, as well as slow fire kneeling or sitting, rapid firing kneeling or sitting, slow or rapid fire standing, or rapid fire standing.
What is required for the Camp Perry Rimfire Sporter Match?
Competitors must bring their own.22 caliber. Rimfire rifles and ammunition are required. You cannot bring special target shooting equipment such as shooting jackets or gloves. However, you can bring ground cloths or shooting mats. The firing points are grassy (sometimes a little wet from rain). The competitors are strongly encouraged to wear hearing and vision protection. The assistance is provided to competitors with disabilities.
A free Shooters’ clinic is usually held in conjunction with the Rimfire sport match at Camp Perry. The Clinic covers Rimfire Sporter Rules, Safety Instructions, Course of Fire, and Competition Procedures. The Clinic is a must for shooters who have never attended a CMP Rimfire Sporter Match.
