Your Editor has tried a variety of ear plugs including foam and soft plastic flange plugs. Howard Leight MAX-1 plugs are my favorite. These earplugs are the best I’ve tried. They have a NRR of 33 and are rated at NRR 33. These plugs are much more effective than muffs. Even with muffs, the rifle report is quite audible. The noise of a gunshot is significantly reduced when using the red MAX-1 plugs. The plugs’ “real-world” effectiveness was demonstrated when I talked. The plugs are so effective that I could not hear a colleague’s words from only four feet away. With conventional (non electronic) muffs, I can hear a normal voice from many yards.
