Cutaway Cartridges – Take a peek inside loaded ammunition

You don’t get to see this every day – the inside of loaded, sliced cartridges. This allows you to see how the bullet core, cartridge case and powder fit together. FOG Ammunition deserves credit for creating these interesting images of cut-through ammunition. Here we show four cartridges: the.308 Winchester (.308 Winchester), 9mm Luger (.309 Luger), 300 BLK (.50 BMG), and.50 BMG. Two more cartridges (the.223 Remington &.45 ACP), can be found at www.FogAmmo.com.

This.308 Winchester replica took a different approach, only cutting the brass casing and displaying all the bullets, primers and powder loads. The model powder form was created using a specific amount of powder. During the forming process an estimated 10% volume, along with a non-determined amount of air pocket was added.

This bisection is made from a 9mm Jacketed Hollow Point Round with flake powder. It was held together by super glue. This self-defense round has been cut by a professional and then polished by hand. This may look like stick-powder, but it’s actually flakes stacked in cross section. This popular cartridge was designed in 1901 by Georg Luger and is used by civilians as well as military and law enforcement.

A Dremel tool has been used to create a pie-shaped cut in the brass and bullet case for this model of.300 AAC Blackout. Super glue was used to place a measured amount of power (approximately 65% of the spec charge) inside the brass case. The cartridge was designed for subsonic use and a suppressor. As a result, the amount of powder is low compared to the nominal capacity. This leaves more space for the relatively large.30 caliber bullet.

The.50 Caliber BMG (also known as the.50 Browning Machine Gun) is not to be forgotten. The.50 BMG cartridge is famous for its use in the M2 Machine guns during wartime, but it is also used by civilians in Long Range competitions. A typical.50 BMG round contains over 225 grains. This is almost ten times more than a 5.56×45 NATO round! Compare the.223 Rem to the.50 BMG to see the size difference.
