Daniel Defense DD4 RIIIS: The Perfect Short Barrel Rifle Configuration?

The AR-15, America’s rifle, is one of my favorite parts about the Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous event. I love all the AR-15s that show up at the event. This year was no exception. When I walked into Daniel Defense’s tent, I was instantly drawn to the DD4 RIII S. This is the newest configuration of RIII line and SBR. The Daniel Defense DD4 RIIIS I have had a few experiences with the RIII line, and I absolutely love them. It is perfect for a short barrel rifle configuration. The DD4 RIII line is one of my favorite AR-15s. Daniel Defense took an AR-15, and asked “what can I do better?” They did it all in this package. Their fully ambidextrous lower is designed to accommodate both left- and right-handed shooters. The fully ambidextrous lower makes it possible for shooters to operate the bolt catch and safety selector without having to move their dominant hands from the Daniel Defense pistol grip. This is something I love. Their grip is made of a polymer with a soft rubber ergonomic wrap. It feels great and works well. Daniel Defense continues to keep the ambidextrous theme alive with their GRIPN-RIP Charging Handle. The handle is large enough to be used with either hand. The all-new RIS III rail system was modeled on the infamous RIS II system, which was specifically designed and adapted for SOCOM. The RIS III rail is M-LOK and not a Picatinny quadrail. It also features the same 6-bolt lock-up design as the RIS II. The rail has the same two-part design of the RIS II. You can also remove the bottom section to run a M203 grenade launcher free-float. You know that everyone has one of these to mount to their AR-15. The adjustable Daniel Defense 6 position Daniel Defense buttstock is located at the rear of your gun. It matches the pistol grip’s design and feel. The DD4 RIII S is a short-barreled version of the DD4. It comes with a 11.5-inch chrome molyvanadium steel, cold hammer forged, government-profile barrel. The barrel has a standard 1/2×28 thread pitch and a twist of 1:7. The barrel can be mounted with the stainless-steel Daniel Defense flashhider or suppressor. The gas system is a carbine length pinned system. This setup maximizes maneuverability while creating a well-balanced tactical platform. To match the barrel length, the rail has been shortened to 10.5 inches. The package reduces recoil impulse and increases accuracy. It also allows for quicker shots with unmatched precision. It is a joy to shoot the Daniel Defense DD4 RIII S. The RIII S’s recoil is very manageable. As a short barrel rifle, I expected a stronger recoil and more noise than I actually made. It feels very balanced and just feels right. The MSRP for the SBR configuration is $2324. You will also need to make a $200 donation to the ATF. If you’re looking for an AR-15 SBR that has more control, incredible ergonomics and lighter weight, the DD4 RIII S is the one you should consider. Daniel Defense DD4 RIII S Specs Caliber: 5.56
