September 27th, 2021 ELR Italian Style — Extreme Shot 1 Mile Italia. While the King of 2 Miles event is underway in Raton, New Mexico, this week’s Extreme Long Range (ELR), competition was just concluded in Trapani, on the west coast of Sicily. The Extreme Shot One Mile Italia in Sicily was held September 22-26 2021.
Our British friend Gary Costello won the top prize. He reported: “The end to a great week in Sicily, competing in the Extreme Shot One Mile Italia contest. It was great to win. Stuart, my shooting partner/spotter, was the one who did the job! Congratulations to the podium winners, Second Place Iacono Rosaario and Third Place Rod Formosa. We are grateful to the organizers of this great competition. We made many new friends. We look forward to seeing you all next year! Click below to see Gary Costello’s Official Video of Extreme Shot One Mile Italia Winner Gary Costello’s last string. The video captures the shots as his spotter sees them. The last string had steel targets at 1400m and 1500m. The 60x70cm plates for the 1400m and 1500m targets, respectively, were used while the 1640m target was 70x80m plates. 1640 meters is 1.019 mi. You can see Gary’s 33XC bullets scoring hits. This includes a clear hit on the 1640m target (beginning at 3:10). Gary’s shots left visible dark spots on steel. Gary was using Berger 300 OTM Bullets to shoot the 33XC cartridge. Built by GS Precision in the UK and featuring a big ELR rifle, it features a BAT?M’ RBLP trigger, Manners LRT carbon stock and Benchmark 34?, a 1:7.5? twist barrel with five grooves. Gary points out that the barrel had only 30 shots through it at the start of the match. The scope was a March 5-42x56mm FFP wide angle with MIL FML-3 Reticle. The event was a long-range challenge in beautiful Sicilian countryside. Targets were placed between 500m and 1640m (one mile is 1609.34 metres). Participants loved the event and we love the setting. Gary Costello’s Post-Match Report. Q: Describe Trapani’s range and the weather conditions during the match. Gary: The range is located in a valley with tall distant hills. This is a great backstop. As you might expect, the weather was warm, often between 80-85 degrees F. Winds blowing from the left up the valley were strong. It was affected by the topography. Due to the conditions, some of the shorter targets were just as difficult as those farther away.
This map shows the target locations at Sicily range, except for cold bore and “surpise”. Q: What do YOU like most about ELR competitions? Gary: This was my first ELR contest. I have been ‘lurking for a while’ and made a trip back to France in 2019 for KO2M (just to see). ELR is quite different from F-Class. The fundamentals are however similar. I enjoy the longer ranges and the challenges they present to make contact. It is important to have a precise rifle. Q: How did Sicily and the hospitality from your fellow competitors compare to yours? Gary: Sicily is a wonderful place with very friendly people. The range staff and organizers went out of their way to help and accommodate everyone. Every day, delicious lunches were delivered! The trip was not easy due to logistical and COVID restrictions. But it was worth it.
