February 24, 2023Dad Creates a.223 Rem FTR Load For His Daughter. Last week, hundreds of F-Class shooters competed in the Southwest Nationals in Phoenix. F-TR shooters used rifles that were chambered for.308 Winchester cartridge (7.62×51), however, F-TR rules allow for the.223 Rem (5.56×45). There are several advantages to the smaller.223 Rem cartridge. They have a significantly lower recoil, bullets, and brass are much cheaper, and require a lot less powder. This story will explain how an accurate.223 Rem load was created for those who want to campaign a.223 Rem FTR rifle. This load was developed by a father to his daughter, who was just starting in F-Class competition. Rowland chose to use the.223 Rem option for his daughter because it has less recoil, and the components are cheaper than the.308Win. Rowland’s story about how he created a.223 Rem load is here. My oldest daughter has been to many matches with me and has even competed in a few using her.243. A few seasons ago, I decided that she would compete using a.223 Remin F-TR. I was looking for a good starter rifle and settled on the Savage Axis Heavy Barrel because it has a 1 to 9? twist. This would make a great little rifle to teach her. The rifle was shot as it came from its factory. The front was fitted with a Sinclair F-Class Bipod with micro elevation adjustment. Next came the task of finding the components I wanted for her match loads. After hours of running numbers in JBM stability calculator and my iPhone Ballistic AE application, the 69g Sierra Tipped MatchKing(R), (TMK) looked great. So I chose that option. I ordered a bulk pack Sierra 69 grTMKs and jumped in headfirst. Hodgdon CFE 223, powder, was my choice because it has good velocity. Next came the testing. I decided to run a ladder testing (one shot per charge, from min to maximum) to find the accuracy node. The ladder test was a range of 23.5 to 25.6 grains in 0.3 grain increments.
