FBI Report: Legally Armed Civilians End Active Shooters

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of yesterday’s Robb Elementary shooting victims in Texas. It is so heartbreaking to see innocent lives taken without warning. This is a sign of a larger problem, and we need to do more. According to the FBI, legally armed civilians can stop active shooters. This is where I feel we are at the moment. Perhaps it is time for something new in school shooting prevention. Let’s first get our country back on the right track. We are on an unsustainable path and people feel it. Parents feel the same way kids do. Second, let us finally admit that gun-free zones do not work. Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), Executive Vice President Alan M. Gottlieb, was our first point of contact regarding gun-free zones. He said, “Gun-free school zone have never worked.” They create a dangerous environment for crazed criminals to exploit. “Our children deserve the same protection that government officials and high end jewelry stores get.” According a recent SAF story, armed citizens are stopping active-shooter. According to the FBI, the story says that in addition to the four murderous perpetrators, 30 violent thugs were captured by law enforcement and 14 were killed or wounded by officers. The report states that one of the victims was killed in a car accident during a pursuit by law enforcement officers, while 11 others committed suicide and one remains at large. The FBI report stated that two criminals were killed by citizen first responders in 2020. Gun-free zones do nothing other than ensure that only violent criminals and active shooters have access to guns. We need a better plan. Perhaps we should increase the number of school counselors to help children cope with the effects of the pandemic. Maybe we should strengthen schools and classrooms with bulletproof doors and glass, as well as barricades. At the very least, an active armed presence should be available for immediate response. Gottlieb stated that “armed retired veterans would be a cost-effective method to help protect our schools.” It is sad that we are in this situation. It is a problem when politicians get armed security but our children don’t. It is important to ask the question, “Would this have been faster if the teacher was armed and trained?” It is a valid question. It is also important to note that the shooter chose an elementary school over his high school. Did he know he would face less resistance? The United States is not the first country to have guns. Since our founding, we have enjoyed the Second Amendment. In fact, I can recall going to school and seeing rifles on gun racks in other students’ trucks. But I don’t recall any active shooter incidents. I’m done with the Political Theater. Believe me, it is not my pleasure to write this story. It is a bitter taste in my mouth, because I have to deal with the political aspects. This should be a time to mourn for the families. Our elected representatives are not letting a good crisis pass them by and are using yesterday’s tragedy as an opportunity to push for more gun control. In a speech last night, President Biden stated that “As a nation we have to ask: When, in God’s Name, are we going to stand against the gun lobby?” “When in God’s Name will we do what all of us know in our guts needs to be done?” Senator Schumer is also using the incident to force a vote for stricter gun control. According to the New York Times, “Within the hours of the shooting at Uvalde, Senator Chuck Schumer (Democrat of New York) moved to clear the path to force votes in the coming days on legislation strengthening background checks for gun purchasers, urging to revive measures that have broad appeal that Republicans had blocked in the past.” This just shows that Democrats are eagerly using this tragedy to push their anti-gun agenda. This ignores the fact active shooter incidents increased by more than 50% between 2020 and 2021. There is more to the story. Gun control won’t help if we don’t address the root causes. It actually encourages active shooters. A Sympathetic Plea For Common Sense Those in the firearm industry grieve yesterday’s tragic loss as much as every American. But attacking the Second Amendment for political gain will not solve anything. It will only serve to deepen the division we feel. While the Second Amendment has been in existence since our founding, over 60 active shooter incidents per year have not. Our children are at risk until we address the deeper issues. Gun advocates want these types of killings to stop, it’s not a secret. We feel a little guilty watching these tragedies unfold and knowing that they could have been prevented if there were stricter gun control laws. People are feeling scared, hurt, and hopeless. We can’t blame guns and just throw a blanket on it. We must do better and look at the root causes. Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today to stay in the loop!
