Federal’s marketing team was the first to notice it. There was a significant and exploitable difference between the.380 ACP and the 9mm cartridges. The 9mm cartridge continues to be the most popular concealed carry handgun cartridge. However, Federal’s team knew that if they split the difference–ballistics-wise–between the two cartridges they’d have something to entice the concealed carry crowd. This was the beginning Federal’s new Super Carry 30 cartridge.

Federal 30 Super Carry
Federal’s secret project was first revealed to me at Athlon Rendezvous in October. My publisher sponsors this get-together that brings together more than 30 firearm, optics and ammunition manufacturers to have uninhibited time with top content creators.
During the safety briefing on the second day, one of my editors pulled me aside. “We’re meeting with Federal & Nighthawk after the range session is over, and before dinner. Do not say anything to anyone! Do you understand? This is top secret!
My curiosity piqued, I wondered for the rest the meaning of the secrecy. Only one other writer was present at the meeting. My editors, the group publisher and the owner of Athlon were also present in the room. Nelson Davis, their CEO, was also present, as were Mark and Landon Stone of Nighthawk Custom.
J.J. Reich, from Vista Outdoors, was the star of the gathering. Vista Outdoors is a conglomerate which owns Federal, CCI and Speer ammunition companies. He was able give us a quick, enthusiastic, and dirty introduction of the 30 Super Carry.

Federal ballisticians and the marketing team thought that if they could create a cartridge with performance half way between the.380 ACP or the 9mm, it would be a very attractive round. They were able not only to meet the midway mark, but they were also able to match and sometimes surpass the performance of the 9mm cartridge.”
