November 17th, 2022Fire Form with Foulers
Here’s a tip to help guys shoot the 6 PPC and 6 Dasher wildcat cartridges. Foulder shots can be used to fire-form new cases. This allows your fouler shots to do double-duty and your brass can be fired without the need for additional rounds. Joel Kendrick is the 2004 IBS 600-yard Shooter-of-the-Year. Joel knows that it takes two to three shots for the bore to foul before accuracy returns after he has cleaned his barrel. (YMMV — Some barrels may require five to six foulers. Joel uses these fouler shots to fire-form the new brass when he shoots his PPC. Joel says, “I like to always have relatively new brass ready. After each match, I fire-form a few cases and have a dozen or so freshly-fired cases ready to go. This will allow you to fire-form your fouler shots without consuming any additional barrel life. This not only saves barrel wear but also saves you trips to range for fire-forming. Joel’s smart suggestion is greatly appreciated. This will help you keep your round count down if you don’t have a barrel specifically for fire-forming. Notice: This fouler fire-forming process requires that you always use the same powder you used to load your match ammo. Joel is currently the Supplier Quality Process Engineer at MMI-TruTec. This company offers barrel surface coatings that can extend your barrel’s life.
