Fire-Form with the Fouler Shots – Save time, bullets, and barrel life

Fire-Form with Fouler Shots

Fire-Form with Foulers
Here’s a handy tip for those who shoot wildcat cartridges like the 6 PPC or 6 Dasher. Use your fouler rounds to fire-form new cartridge cases. So your fouler shots can do “double duty” and you will get your brass fired-formed without having to put extra rounds through your expensive barrel.
Joel Kendrick is the 2004 IBS 600 yard Shooter of the year. He recommends this procedure. Joel Kendrick knows that it takes two to three shots for the bore to foul before accuracy can be restored. Joel uses the fouler shots when he shoots his PPC to fire-form new brass. Joel explains, “I like to always have relatively new brass ready. After each barrel-cleaning, I fire-form a couple of cases. By the end of the match weekend, I have a dozen or so freshly-fire-formed cases. You can fire-form your fouler shots without wasting any barrel life.
This will not only reduce barrel wear but also your trips to the range when you want to fire-form. We thank Joel for his clever suggestion. This should help those who don’t have a barrel dedicated to fire-forming keep their round count down. Note: When using this fouler fire forming routine, it is important to ALWAYS use the SAME POWDER that you use for your match ammo. Joel is currently the Supplier Quality Process Engineering for MMI TruTec, a company which offers barrel surface coatings to extend barrel life.
