The video below shows Shiraz Balolia demonstrating the basics of fire-forming brass using his water-cooled, custom-made benchrest railgun. Shiraz is currently a Team member (and former Team captain) of the U.S. F.Class Open Rifle team. Shiraz has competed at the National and World levels for more than 20 years and has won numerous major International championships in 1000 yard shooting. He will show you how to make fire with.284 Shiraz, which is a wildcat based upon the.284 Winchester.
Proper fire-forming is essential for accuracy in a match rifle. Fire-forming can improve cartridge consistency from shot to shot if done correctly. Shiraz explains that even a basic design can help save time and frustration on the range. The key is to get the initial case expansion to match your competition chamber quickly without generating excessive heat. Shiraz will guide you through the process of fire-forming, both at his shop and on the range.
Shiraz is a top competitor as well as the owner of the successful Grizzly Industrial company. He is also a member of the U.S. F.Open team. He has participated in three world championships. He has won three consecutive Canadian National F-Class Championships in recent years (READ 3-Peat STREAY). This guy is a pro at his job.
Shiraz shows fellow shooters how he fires-form cases efficiently, without wasting precious match barrel life. The video shows Shiraz using a custom-designed railgun which uses water cooling to cool the barrel. This is done by running hoses from a sink so that cool water flows through the barrel jacket.
Shiraz claims that the fired cartridges are cool to the touch due to the water-jacketed barrel keeping everything at a moderate temperature. (See video at 8:00).
