Firearm Retention is an essential skill for civilians who carry concealed firearms

Enter to WIN a Gun Friday Giveaway > IWI’s soon-to-be released Masada Slim Pistol and Caldwell Emax Shadows Pro Close A Crime Prevention Research Center study found that concealed handgun permits rose dramatically in 2020. The total number reached 21.52million in 2020, an increase of 48% over 2016 numbers and 10.5% over 2019. Nationally, 8.3% of adults have CCW permits. In 15 states, it’s more than 10%. The responsibility for firearm retention is increasing with the increase in civilian arming themselves. RELATED STORY Finding the Right Self-Defense Training for You Requires Simplicity Firearm Storage for Civilians. I strongly believe that an armed society is a polite one, but I also believe that CCW permit holders must train diligently. This training should go beyond gunhandling and marksmanship. It should include combative skills, such as weapon retention techniques. Most people think that “handgun retention” refers to duty-bound personnel who carry handguns in open pockets. This is true, but it doesn’t mean that this skill set is irrelevant. No matter if you’re a civilian or an armed professional on duty, a bad guy may try to take your gun. Therefore, you must have the skills to stop him. Gun grabs can take place in one of three ways. The assailant could try to take your gun from your holster or he might try to disarm your gun after you draw. Or, while you and the gun are focused on one person, another threat attempts to disarm your gun. Let’s look at all of these possibilities from the point of view of a legally armed civilian. Concealed Carry: Keep Your Gun in the Holster. The key word in the phrase “concealed carry,” is “concealed.” This is the best way to prevent a gun grabber from grabbing your weapon. This may seem obvious but many CCW holders, including many experienced ones, don’t know how to do it well. You could be accused of concealing your gun with a poorly placed holster, inadequate cover garment or self-conscious carry habits. Do your research and seek out qualified instructors to help you solve this problem. Most instructors who give CCW permits only provide the minimum training. Real training should cover holster selection, conceal carry strategies, as well as carry strategies. You can then purchase high-quality belts and holsters as well as cover clothes based on this training. Learn how to conceal your gun. Don’t worry about constantly checking and repositioning your gun to announce its presence. Carry confidently. The Guarded Draw and Weapon Retention Shooting Position This is the next weapon-retention context. You draw your gun when you are responding to a threat that is close by. You should, I know, identify the threat early and respond with distance. However, sometimes things don’t work out as planned. This is especially true if your attacker is armed a contact-distance gun. In such situations, the attacker’s goal is to get as close to you as possible before launching an attack. If he is close enough to strike or stab you, he will also grab your gun. You should draw to a safe weapon-retention position to prevent this. My preferred “guarded drawing” position places your palm of non-weapon hand against your forehead, just above your eyebrows. Left hand for the right-handed majority. To protect your neck and arm, keep your arm straight up above your head. Your arm will form a solid triangle and cannot be moved in front of your muzzle. This position is not like many contact-distance shooting stances. It also doesn’t raise your elbow above the shoulder. This position allows an attacker to push your elbow above your shoulder and knock you off balance. Your armpit is also vulnerable to edged-weapon attack. Your gun hand should hold the gun in its holster securely with a straight trigger finger. To draw, raise your elbow and keep your wrist straight. Next, lower your elbow and rotate your muzzle forward. Your gun hand should be firmly against your right pectoral muscles. The base of your thumb should be just below your right index. Your thumb should be “flagging”, which creates an offset between your gun and your body. You can also pin any loose clothing to your body. This allows the slide’s to cycle freely, and is instinctive and more effective than “canting” your hands outward. Prevention is better than cure. This weapon-retention position protects your gun and makes it difficult to grab. You can also use your guard arm to prevent any grabs. To stop an attacker reaching for your gun, turn your shoulders and use your guarding elbow to deflect his arm. This is far more effective than fighting with your hand and prevents you from fending for your gun. Your gun will be moved further away from the threat by your shoulders. Use the same tactic if the threat attempts to grab your gun. To drive him away, turn your shoulders and use all of your body’s power to move his hand. Pull your gun hand back as you do so. This will create a powerful shearing action that will even break a strong grip. To make this even more efficient, rotate your hand 90° so that it’s palm-up. This “stacks”, the bones of your forearm, and anchors your gun butt against your ribs. It prevents your wrist from bending around the rib cage. After you have released your gun, turn to your left and strike the attacker with a backhand hammerfist. Return to your weapon-retention location and continue to follow up as needed. Third-Party Problems Bad guys are often in pairs or in groups. A second attacker could grab your gun from the side if you draw and aim at one of your assailants. To maximize your strength, keep your hands close to your body if this happens. Imagine rowing a boat. Then, use your back muscles and pull your elbows to your ribs. To create the same weapon-retention position, pivot your body so that your muzzle is facing the attacker. To generate power, you can step forward or backward depending on whether your muzzle is in line. Your ultimate goal is to move your body in the same way as earlier. You must learn how to control your handgun. It is easiest to do this with a set of simple mechanics that provide both proactive and reactive solutions to most likely threats in one package. Begin by getting a partner and a gun, and slowly go through the mechanics. You will improve your understanding and skills, so you can increase your speed, intensity and realism. You should also include decision-making, verbal skills, as well as a logical assessment process to ensure you follow up. Train hard, stay safe.
