A Kahr PM9 pistol was my personal defense weapon for many years. The gun was introduced in the early 2000s. It measured 1-inch wide, had an inch barrel, and weighed just over 1 pound when fully loaded with the 7+1 extended single-stack magazine. I carried the Crossbreed AIWB in a holster and went about my daily business, not worrying about whether I was inadequately armed.

I was not the only one. Every manufacturer had a 9mm subcompact, striker fired, polymer-framed gun with one-stack magazines. CCW enthusiasts saw a rapid increase in sales. These little guns proved to be reliable, accurate, and light-weight. They were also very easy to carry. We all made the sacrifice to have these concealable handguns. No one seemed to mind.

Everything changed at the SHOT Show 2018. SIG introduced the P365, which allowed shooters to have a small carry gun with a large capacity. SIG Sauer broke the code by finding a way to fit a lot of rounds into a tapered double-column mag that fits into a very slim polymer frame. SIG Sauer also equipped the P365 with a nice trigger and night sights. Although the price was reasonable, SIG was able to meet demand. However, it caused a feeding frenzy that the company couldn’t satisfy. Other manufacturers were left behind and it became a mad race for a subcompact with greater capacity.

Kimber has unveiled the R7 Mako, a subcompact pistol with a polymer frame and striker-fired design that is designed to take on the competition. The R7 Mako is a compact subcompact pistol that shooters can use to carry concealed weapons. It has a healthy capacity of 11, for its flush-fit magazine, and 13, for its extended mag.

They also conducted extensive surveys to find out what the consumer wanted. The R7 Mako is the result of all these efforts. It’s a gun that was built from scratch to meet the needs of concealed carriers, and not a rework of an existing model. Sometimes it pays not to jump in dark and unfamiliar waters.
