Since its release in 2011, the 1911 DS Prodigy by Springfield Armory is gaining popularity among shooters. The pistol has all the features that people love about 1911, but with a double stack capacity. Due to restrictions in some states or jurisdictions, not everyone is able to enjoy the large capacity. Springfield Armory has decided to make the Prodigy available to everyone with its 10-round capacity.

The 1911 DS Prodigy is available in both 4.25-inch and 5-inch versions. It features a polymer handle mounted to a forged steel frame. The grip is wrapped in Adaptive Grip Texture to ensure positive retention when firing. This grip texture is popularized on the Hellcat line of firearms. It provides a secure hold, whether it’s wet or not.

A squared trigger guard is located just forward of the grip. It has a high undercut that promotes a secure grip and helps to reduce recoil. Picatinny rail is located in front of the trigger guard for attaching a laser or light. The 4.25-inch model features a single slot and the 5-inch version has five slots.

A forged slide with aggressive serrations for forward and rear cocking sits atop the frame. A fiber-optic rear sight and a front sight with serrated edges provide the aiming solution. The slide has an optic cut that allows you to install your red dot optical.

The rear sight is attached to an optic cover plate. It will be removed along with the plate. The Prodigy uses the AOS (Agency Optic Systems) plates. The plates are equipped with a rear-view sight that is designed to work with your optic.

The slide houses a 4.25 or 5 inch bushingless forged bull barrel in 9mm. The Prodigy’s safety is provided by an ambidextrous beavertail grip and thumb safety.

Prodigy is now available with a 10-round capacity to allow people who live in restricted jurisdictions to use it. The internals are the same. If you move to a place without capacity restrictions, the gun will still run on 17-, 20 or 26 round magazines.
