July 14, 2022 Five Key Gear Items to Get You Started in the PRS/NRL GameReport By Craig Arnzen, Area419.com
It’s easy for you to focus on shooting your first precision rifle match, and not think about the gear and trinkets you will need. The old rules still apply. Keep it simple. We wanted to create a list of the Top Five Gear Items that you will need for your first match. This list will focus on the “must have” items for PRS-Style competitions. A rifle (That is reliable and sub-MOA accurate) Your rifle is the most obvious piece, but we can provide some more information. Most of the men you’ll see shooting 6.5 Creedmoor are there to help. Yes, there are 6mm Dashers and.308 Wins, but 6.5 Creedmoor is more than half the rounds shot in PRS competition when you look at both club and national matches. Your comp rig must be mag-fed and have a minimum of 1 MOA. It doesn’t have to be better than 0.5 MOA (half MOA). A half-MOA gun is sufficient for most targets, which are usually between 2 and 3 MOA in size. While accuracy is always better, you don’t necessarily need a quarter-MOA gun to win. [Editor’s NOTE: PRS does offer a Gas Gun division, but most guys start out with a bolt-action rifle, which will be less maintenance-intensive than an AR-platform rig. Muzzle brakes like the Area 419 Hellfire are also very popular, as part of the PRS game is recoil control. You’ll have more misses if you can’t see them. A repeatable click optic and a reticle that uses MOA- or Mil-based hashmarks is also required for the rifle. Clicks can be either MOA or Mil system (Mil is the more common), as long as they match the reticle’s click values (i.e. You don’t want to have 1/4-moa clicks when you use a Mil-marked Reticle. What power do you require? Anything that zooms in the middle-teens should be sufficient. I could shoot a match using a 12X fixed scope and not feel disenfranchised. If you are looking for a recommendation, the Kahles K624i is a great choice. There’s nothing wrong with starting with a Harris swivel. You might then look at bipods on similar rifles to see if they are any good. Ammunition — Factory Ammo, Hand-loadsGood ammunition is important, but 0.5 MOA is sufficient. Speed is important, but it doesn’t matter as much as you might think. Drop can be calculated with precision and distances are usually known so a slightly flatter trajectory doesn’t really matter. Wind is important, but the difference between the last 50 fps and the rest of the trajectory will be very, very small.
Federal, Hornady and Prime all make high-quality ammo that is widely utilized by shooters at all levels, from local to national matches. Precision Handloads
You’ll love the AutoTrickler and our billet aluminum accessories if you want to explore the rabbit hole of finding the perfect ammo. 3. A versatile support bag There is one bag that you will see everywhere and it is the One Bag. The Game-Changer is Armageddon Gear’s best-known bag. It is used by many shooters as a barricade bag and a rear bag. This bag can be used for an entire match. Ask your squad members if you need another bag. I promise. 4. Ballistics Calculator AppAll PRS/NRL shooters require reliable and accurate ballistic solutions. The software-enabled Kestrel, which is a common item at the range, is also very popular. However, you will also see many guys using mobile Apps like Shooter or Applied Ballistics Mobile. They have great results. An armband or an item such as the Hawk Hill data card holder is handy for stages with different targets at different ranges. It’s a great idea to have it written down once the RO says “engage” and you stop thinking. Hearing ProtectionPRS Competitors shoot in enclosed spaces and with brakes. You need serious hearing protection. To hear range commands, we recommend NRR33 earplugs. We recommend double-up with Electronic Muffs. The 33 dB NRR Mack’s foamies have been my favorite for matches over the past year. The Howard Leight NRR33 Max-1s are also very efficient. The Howard Leight Impact Sport Electronic muffs are affordable (under $50), but they work well. However, premium electronic muffs like the ESP Stealth, which is high-tech and in-ear, digital units, are growing in popularity. I have a set linked ESP Steaths in the works and will be evaluating them soon. These are supposed to be very high quality, but the ESP Stealths are $2100.00 per pair! Have more questions? We’d love to hear from you. Contact: Team@Area419.com Similar Posts:Tags: 6.5 Creedmoor, Area 419, Craig Arnzen, ESP Stealth, hearing Protection, Hornady Ammo, Kahles Scope, PRS, Tactical
