According to NWI Times, “While officers were [en route], they were updated that a suspect had made entry to the residence by breaking through the window,” [Gary police Lieutenant. Dawn] Westerfield stated.”
The woman decided to not wait for the police after the 36-year old would-be burglar broke through the window and gained entry. Instead, she shot and ended the intruder’s attempts to break into her home.
WGN9 reports that the man was found with gunshot wounds in front of the house by officers who arrived on the scene. The woman claimed she had fired her weapon but wasn’t sure if she struck the man.
Although police have not identified the man, they report he was later declared deceased by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The shooting is currently under investigation. No word yet on initial findings. The police will likely rule that this was a case of self-defense. Even if the case is ruled clear-cut self defense, she will still be a victim for many years. She will still be here.
