You’re not a member a SWAT team, a military special operations unit, or someone who trains many days per week with a full range of protective gear and armament. There are only two of you. Gunsite’s Team Tactics course can help you prepare for such a situation. RELATED STORY: Finding the right self-defense training for you involves simplicity Gunsite’s team tactics course. Perhaps you have just returned from a night out and found the front door open and your teenage son or daughter screaming in the house. You could also be in a shopping mall, office building or restaurant when active shooters enter. You might be left behind after a disaster, or there are looters and rioters everywhere. Ordinary citizens can find themselves in dangerous situations, sometimes in the dark or in smoke-filled corridors. There are potential threats around every corner and door. You don’t have to be alone if you find yourself in a situation where you need to escape. You might be with your spouse, a hiking companion, or a coworker. You might be able work together to find a solution. The solution doesn’t need to be perfect, and there are no right answers. A successful conclusion is one that allows you to survive. These were just a few of the considerations that our small group made while attending Team Tactics for Two at Gunsite Academy. The course was sponsored by Mossberg & Sons, DeSantis Gunhide, and Federal Premium. There are many benefits to having a partner when you are in a difficult situation. You have twice as many eyes to look out for danger signs when there are two of us. You have twice the firepower if you are both trained and armed. You are responsible for only half of the rooms or areas you pass through when you work together. You can trust that your partner will be there for you. This Gunsite course includes classroom instruction, live fire training on an outdoor range, exercises to navigate safely through buildings with a partner, and finally, force-on–force scenarios using Simunition’s non-lethal marking round and role players, indoors and outdoors. Each section complements the other to create a comprehensive, useful curriculum. Discussions and classroom instruction helped to familiarize the concepts and provide feedback on the training exercises. The course included a significant live-fire range section. Gunsite stressed gun handling and marksmanship skills under pressure. Our group was also able to test the Mossberg MC2c Compact Pistols. Keys to Consider Paired, we were amazed at how many things we had in common while moving through the Gunsite shoothouses, initially with the “blue” solid-plastic guns. We had to constantly scan for dangers and clear potential hiding places, make decisions about how to safely move through doors into adjoining rooms and take angles to show as little as possible. When we encountered others, it was possible to tell the difference between friend and foe in a split-second. We were careful to keep our muzzles away from our partners, but we were ready to engage any threat. 1. Safety first. Because we were dealing with these situations as civilians, our primary concern was finding a safe exit or getting to a loved one who is in danger. We were less concerned about clearing every room or searching for contraband. Because civilians don’t make arrests, sometimes it is better to retreat than to engage in a threat. 2. Preparation is another important aspect. Perhaps your spouse has only a basic training. Your spouse might only have a five-shot snub nose revolver while your coworker has a 15-round semiauto with spare magazines. Each member of a two-person team has a vital role. Even if they are just an additional set of eyes or ears. 3. Communicate. As the course progressed, it became clear that communication between partners was crucial. Communicate with your partner. Communication was essential in order to move forward and continuously assess the team. Communication does not have to be verbal. Sometimes, a hand motion or nod suffices. 4. No advance notice The force-onforce portion of the course allows participants to put all they have learned to the test in a controlled environment that feels more real than it is. This particular course had three scenarios: a robbery at restaurant, a hostage situation inside a house, as well as an outdoor outing in which the threat wasn’t apparent initially. While we were properly equipped with protective equipment, we felt just as vulnerable in the heat of “battle”, to feel the sting from a tactical miscue. These scenarios provided valuable lessons. We knew we were in trouble even though we didn’t know the details. We will not have advance notice in the real world. A real-world situation will likely present unique challenges that cannot all be covered in a two day course. Keep on Training. Team tactics should be a continuous process. Communication must begin before things get serious. Gunsite advised us to take the ideas home to share with our families. It is possible to increase awareness of potential signs of trouble, agree on the use code words between team members, and spot safe exit locations. Gunsite is well-known for its excellent firearm training courses. I found this one especially relevant in today’s world. The instructors for this particular course, Mario Marchman, Paul Kultala, and Il Ling New, were highly skilled, encouraging, and knowledgeable. We also had the benefit of the expertise and experience provided by Sheriff Jim Wilson and Gunsite CEO Ken Campbell who are both former sheriffs. Although I highly recommend training from professionals of this calibre, I understand that not all will be able. If you are unable to take Gunsite’s Team Tactics class, it is a smart move to meet with your friends and family to discuss ways you might work together to survive these dangerous encounters.
