In the last two years, millions of Americans have become gunowners. For most gun owners, their first purchase was a handgun. It is most likely a 9mm compact. These are the nine most notable new handguns* that were introduced in the last 12 months. Many were unveiled at SHOT Show 2022 while others were introduced at 2021.
The Taurus TX22 SCR was created as a fun rimfire to steel plate competition and for action pistol games. The pistol’s balance and ergonomics are great. The integrated forward compensator reduces muzzle flip, which allows for faster follow-up shots, and faster split times. Springfield Arms introduced the SA-35, FN Herstal now has a High Power, and Turkish company Girsan produces the MC P35 (sold by EAA in the USA). EAA’s MC P35 is based on the John M. Browning pistol design. Girsan’s MC P35 pays tribute to one of the most popular military handguns ever made. The steel-framed MC P35 has a 15+1 capacity and a staggered column magazine. This MC P35 is a classic design, well-machined, and a bargain at a sub-$600 MSRP. It comes in three finishes: Black, Black, and Dark Earth. Uberti 9mm Single-Action Classic revolvers. Italian gunmaker Uberti has added new 9mm wheelguns to its collection of classic single-action revolvers. Uberti has selected El Patr?n or Cattleman Brass single action revolvers that are chambered for the 9mm Luger (9x19mm). These revolvers have headspace at the cartridge mouth and can be loaded with cartridges individually in the cylinder. 9mm Luger ammo is available at a lower cost than other handgun cartridges. This allows revolver shooters to put more rounds on target without breaking your bank. Stoeger’s new STR-9SC series includes three models: STR-9SC with Tritium night sights, STR-9SC Optic-Ready, and the base model TR-9SC. All models come with a medium backstrap and a left- or right-side mag-release, trigger safety, accessory rails, front post/square-notch rear sight configuration, and 10 round magazines. All of these are very affordable — the basic STR-92C sub-compact pistol has a $329.99 MSRP. Shadow Systems DR-920P pistol with integral compensatorShown at top of this article is the Shadow Systems DR920P 9mm LUGGER pistol that features a built-in multi-port compensator at its barrel. This reduces muzzle flip and felt recoil, allowing for faster split times in multi-target situations. The front sight is mounted on top of the forward compensator, so it doesn’t reciprocate with the slide. This new pistol is a good choice for 3-Gun and Steel Challenge shooters. The DR920P is compatible with Glock 34 holsters. We like the ergonomics of the Shadow DR920P’s trigger better that a standard Glock trigger. Kimber R7 Mako Optics InstalledReleased 2021, the R7 was Kimber’s first Polymer-framed handgun. The factory-installed CTS-1500 Reflex Sight for accurate shot placement and target acquisition is featured in the latest R7 Mako optics-equipped model ($799.00 MSRP). Capacity: 12+1 with flush fit mag or 14+1 when extended. The pistol has co-witnessed Tritium night sights and a Hooded ejection port that allows gasses/brass to be vented away from the optic. This includes a matte black stainless version with rubber grip. Altamont wood grip model (MSRP $517.33) These are considerably less expensive than comparable S&Ws. The Defender 605 has an extended ejector rod, which allows for faster reloads than other 3-inch barrel revolvers. The Defender 605s have a factory-installed tritium front sight with an orange outline. The Ruger PC Charler pistol is a handgun version Ruger’s PC Carbine. Although the pistol was introduced last year, it is now being sold without the legally-problematic folding stock (err… a “pistol brace”) The PC Charger 2022 model still features a quick-detachable barrel system, an MLOK rail and a 1913 rail on the top for accessories. The PC Charger can carry Ruger pistol magazines and a drop-in conversion for Glock magazines. Although this is not a carry gun, we can see why someone might use it for home defense or fun shooting steel. Good Handgun Transport Case — Displaced Gun Luggage This is a practical option for transporting handguns on range trips.
