The bore is then filled with a hardened mandrel that is the right width (caliber) as well as a rifling pattern, which has been reversed/inverted. The pair are then placed in a forging machine, which compresses the steel against its mandrel and hammers it into its final form. Some barrels still have barely discernible spiral patterns.
