This process produces the most consistent barrels on the market today. The bore is then filled with a hardened mandrel that is the right width (caliber) as well as a rifling pattern, which has been reversed/inverted. The pair are then placed in a forging machine, which compresses the steel against its mandrel and hammers it into its final form. Some barrels still have barely discernible spiral patterns. These are imprints of the hammers at work. However, some companies polish them out. Companies must invest a lot in cold hammer forging machinery. After the hammer forging process has been completed and the mandrel removed the barrel will be the right length and profile with consistent and butter-smooth rifling.
