Close Despite optics being all the rage, many still prefer the simplicity and reliability of iron sights. They are a great backup. If the front and rear sights don’t align properly, shot placement and accuracy will be affected. They can also be dangerous in self-defense or home situations if they are too far apart. This brief primer will show you how to adjust your iron sight if necessary. RELATED STORY MEPRO FRBS: Backup Flip Up Sights Add Hyperbright Illumination A primer on how to adjust and zero in iron sights. Some people prefer to zero at 25 metres, while others prefer to zero at 50 meters. Depending on the purpose of your iron sight, you might want to zero at 100 meters. Keep in mind the impact this will have on close-quarters applications. We chose a 50-yard zero for this exercise. Zeroing In 1.) Zeroing In 1.) Any movement, however slight, can throw off your shots and impact the point of bullet contact. 2.) 2.) Place a target 25 meters downrange, and fire a three-round group. 3.) 3.) Based on the location of your shots, determine if you should adjust for windage, elevation or both. 4.) 4.) If it is the front sight then move the post up or lower (a tool may be necessary). The general rule of thumb for adjusting a front view is to move it in the opposite direction that your group wants. If you are shooting low, lower your front sight. Your front sight may not have an adjustment, so adjust the elevation using your rear sight. This is how an AR-15 adjustable front iron sight looks. They are easy to adjust. To adjust the elevation, push the button at the front of your sight. Adjust the rear sight windage knob (left/right) if you need to adjust windage. You may also need to adjust your rear sight for elevation. To do this, you will use the elevation dial (up/down). Rear iron sights should be adjusted in the direction your group wants. If you are hitting the target high and to your right, move the sight down and to your left. You can refer to the acronym FORS (Front sight opposite, rear sight same) to help you remember. 6. Example of windage dials and elevation dials for a standard AR-15 rear-iron sight. Shoot three-round groups, adjust the sights until you reach the desired point of-aim or point-of impact. 7.) Once you have a target at 25 yards, move the target back to 50 yards. You will only need to adjust your elevation at this point. Things to consider when you adjust iron sights. First, ensure that your bench rest is stable if you have trouble shooting a tight group. Also, ensure your bench rest is stable. A gunsmith can help you adjust your sight. After the adjustments have been made, you should continue practicing until your group is tightened. If you have trouble dialing in your zero, adjust the elevation or windage separately. Shoot a three-round group, adjust your elevation, and then shoot another three-round group. Next, shoot a three-round group and adjust the windage. It may be easier to focus on one adjustment at the time. If your sights are too far away and you aren’t hitting the paper, you can pull the target closer. Move the target closer to 10 yards. Next, move the target out to 25 yards. Finally, move it out to the desired 50 yards. After you have finished adjusting and zeroing your sights, you can now go on to the range, hunt, or personal defense. Sign up for the Personal Defense World newsletter today to stay in the loop!
