How to Choose and Setup a Decapping Diet
One Forum member complained that his primers wouldn’t fit flush to the rim. He tried many primer tools but the primers didn’t fit deep enough. He measured his primers and found that they were the correct thickness. However, his primer pockets didn’t seem deep enough. He was puzzled as to why this was happening.
Boyd Allen, our friend, diagnosed the problem. It was the decappingrod. If the rod is too low (screwed in far enough), the base of full-diameter rod shaft (just below the pin) will contact your case. The shaft is made of steel, while your case is made from brass, which is a softer, weaker metal. The shaft can stretch the base of your primer pocket outward when you lift the case into the die. Most presses have enough leverage for this. If you push the primer pocket’s base outwards, it will ruin your case. A primer cannot be properly seated if this happens.
It is easy. The only thing you need to do is adjust the decapping rod to ensure that the rod shaft’s base does not touch the inside of your case. The pin should only extend past the flash hole enough to knock out the primer. The photo is of a Lyman Universal Decapping Die. The same thing can happen to any die with a decapping rod such as bushing neck-sizing and full-length-sizing.
When you first use a die with decapping pin, or when you move it to another press, be sure to check the length of the decapping rod. It’s a good idea to check the height setting of full-length sizing tools when changing presses.
There are many decapping tools on the market today, including models from Sinclair Int’l, RCBS and Lee.
Midsouth Shooters Supply offers the Lee Universal Decapping Die at a Discount of $10.96 There are many reasons why you might want to remove the primers from fired brass separately (prior to case-sizing). De-caping rifle brass may be a good idea if it is dirty. If you use a progressive press to load your brass, it will make things run more smoothly if you do the decaping first.
Decapping Dies for Cases With Smaller Flashholes
NOTE: Some Euro Small Flash Holes are spec’d at 1.5mm, 0.059?, and top out at about.062?”, so these require a smaller die pin.
The Lee Universal Decapping Die is affordable and will work with cartridges ranging from 17 Fireball to large Magnums. The decapping pin included with this Lee die is too large for LAPUA 220 Russian cartridges, 6mmBR, 6.5×47 and 6.5 Creedmoor cartridges. The pin diameter is too big for these brass types. You can either turn the pin down or use a different tool to decap the case with.059-.062. Flash-holes
Sinclair Int’l has a stainless decapping die that includes both.080 or.060 pins. Three decap pins are included with the $39.99 die for standard.080? flash holes, and two pins to.060? flash holes
Redding offers a Universal Decapping Die that can be used with a smaller diameter decapping rod to accommodate smaller.059-.062 sizes. Flash holes are found on the BR or PPC cases. This video explains how to use this die.
