How to Create a Dummy round to aid barrel chambering

October 14th 2023How To Create A Dummy round to Aid Barrel chamberingHow and Why To Create A Dummy roundIt makes sense to make a dummy cartridge when you are having a custom rifle made or a barrel fitted to your existing rifle. It should be made with your preferred brass and the bullet type, and the bullet should be seated at the optimal depth. A dummy cartridge helps the gunsmith to set the freebore for your cartridge and ensure the correct chamber dimensions. Greg Tannel created a video that shows how to make a dummy. Greg explains the process of measuring and assembling the dummy, and how it is used during the barrel chambering. Greg explains that the dummy round must have NO primer and no powder. We recommend that every rifle shot watch this video. Even if you don’t plan to buy a new barrel anytime soon, you can still learn important information about freebore geometry, leade geometry, and chamber geometries. This video has received 782,000 views. Here are some actual comments on YouTube: That’s the best explanation I have ever seen. Thank you sir. — P. Pablo Nice video. You make it very easy to understand for new reloaders. I wish I had known about this when I first started reloading rifles and building custom ones. Your work is outstanding. Brandon K. Great job explaining chambering clearances. D. Giorgi Another Cool tool — The Stub GaugeWhen your gunsmith chambers your barrel, he can also create a Stub Gauge. a cast-off barrel section chambered like your actual barrel. The stub gauge allows you to measure the original length of your barrel’s lands and freebore at its new state. This allows you to assess the erosion of your throat over time. As the throat wears down, you will need to measure your barrel’s length from the lands. The barrel stub is used to set the initial seating depth. The seating depth is adjusted based on throat erosion or your preferred depth.
