How to Evaluate Flyers during Load Development

Sometimes, someone will ask “Why did I get a Flyer that didn’t go in with my group?” Flyers can happen for many reasons. I wish I could give you an answer. There are many reasons why flyers can happen, including gripping a forearm differently and variations in the brass casing. The majority of flyers are shooter-induced. Sometimes, what you think is a flyer may be just part of your group. Many shooters will test loads and shoot 3/8″ groups at 100 yards. They may think the load is good. It is possible to shoot a different group with the same load and rifle, and get a 1 1/4″ group. A 1 1/4″ group may be shot and then a 1/2 will follow. You can shoot a 1 1/4″ group and then turn around and shoot a 1/2? group. You can’t change anything if you only shoot one group. You will see a better representation of the load if you shoot more rounds for each group. It would be pointless and in some cases it might be time to rebarrel your rifle. However, you will get a good idea of how the load will perform in your specific firearm if you shoot at least three to five 5-shot groups.
