September 25th 2023Many Benchresters who play at short ranges have considered converting their 6PPC to a 30BR or Dasher for games played at mid-ranges (or even 1,000-yards). You can get the most out of your rifle by converting it to do double duty. A PPC bolt will not normally work with 30BR/6BR/Dasher cartridges with their larger.308 class rim (0.4728″ diameter). However, there is a simple solution that allows you to cycle these bigger cartridges with a 6PPC-style bolt (designed to fit.220 Russian rims). There is an easy way to cycle these larger cartridges using a 6PPC style bolt (designed to fit Russian rims of.220). “Rebating the case rims… allows you to shoot a 30-BR in score matches with your PPC action. You only need a new barrel. This will save you from buying a new bolt, receiver or rifle.” This tip was provided by Butch Lambert, ShadeTree Engineering. Butch points out that many 6 PPC benchrest shooters also enjoy score matches. To be competitive in the BR score game, you need to shoot a 30BR with a.308-class rim (0.47228? diameter). If you are competing in 600-yard registered BR matches or in varmint events, you will probably want to use a larger case, like the 6BR, 6mm dasher, or 6-6.5×47. These cartridges have larger 0.4728″ rims. rims. Rebate on 30 BR RimsYou can spend a lot of money on a new bolt to convert a PPC-boltface to shoot larger cases. This can cost hundreds. The easier solution is to reduce the diameter of larger cases using a lathe. Butch explains that there has been a lot of interest in rebating the case rims. This allows you to shoot a 30BR with your PPC action in score matches. You only need a new barrel. If you have a PPC Boltface, this will save you from buying a new bolt, receiver or rifle. Anyone with a lathe could do this job fairly easily. Yesterday I turned about 150 cases in an hour.” Butch uses the lathe form tool to rebate the case rims. Cutting Head for Rebating Rims
