How to Use a Kestrel With Applied Ballistics Software

December 11, 2021 Kestrel wind/weather meters are widely regarded as the best available on the market. F-Class John has created three videos that demonstrate how the Kestrel Elite Ballistics 5700 works. This article reviews the Kestrel Elite Wind Meter 5700 Elite with advanced ballistics capabilities. F-Class John has created three videos that demonstrate how the Kestrel Elite 5700 Elite functions using Applied Ballistics APP software. Part I of this Part I Video begins with a basic Kestrel Anemometer (blue box, 00:00-00.40) wind meter. F-Class John, a reviewer, looks at the “smart Kestrel” 5700 with Elite Ballistics. John explains the Kestrel5700’s many features and how it houses a powerful ballistics calculator within the Kestrel package. Elite Ballistics allows you to enter data about your bullets velocity, zero, rifle, and rifle. The Kestrel can calculate come ups and wind corrections. We recommend that you view this series of videos to learn more about advanced Kestrel features. Part II of this video shows the key features and functions of Elite Ballistics’ Kestrel 5700 unit’s advanced software APP. The Kestrel 5700 “talks” to a mobile device running the Applied Ballistics software APP. This app contains bullet databases and allows for key information like muzzle velocity, bullet BC and velocity. Gun-specific factors include scope height over bore, barrel twist rate, and scope height over bore. The video explains how “range cards” were created and how you can view them with your Elite Ballistics enabled Kestrel. John says that the APP is great because it doesn’t require you to mess with the Kestrel buttons. The APP makes it much easier to enter data or change settings. Part III shows you how to determine the true wind direction by aligning your SIDE against the wind. The impeller should be set at 90 degrees to the wind direction. After you have set your target distance (See:03), the unit will give you exact come-ups for your target (559 yards here, 10.28 MOA). The Kestrel also calculates cross-wind correction (See 3:02).
