How to use Kestrel Wind meter with Applied Ballistics Software

Kestrel weather and wind meters are often regarded the best on the marketplace — with good reason. Here is a series of 3 videos by F Class John that demonstrate how the Kestrel with Elite Ballistics functions. This article reviews the advanced Kestrel Elite Wind Meter, which has sophisticated ballistics abilities. Three videos by F Class John show how the Kestrel Elite 5700 Elite works with Applied Ballistics APP and LiNK connection.

This Part I video starts with the basic Kestrel Anemometer (00:00-00:40, blue case). F-Class John then reviews the “smart Kestrel” 5700 with Elite Ballistics. John explains all the features of the Kestrel and how it is a powerful ballistics calculate in a convenient, easy to carry Kestrel package. Once you enter your bullets’ velocity, zero and rifle into Elite Ballistics the Kestrel will calculate wind corrections and come-ups. We recommend that you watch these videos if you do not yet own a Kestrel. They explain advanced Kestrel functions in detail.

This Part II video shows the key features used by the Kestrel unit with Elite Ballistics. The Kestrel 5700 is able to “talk” with a mobile device running the Applied Ballistics software APP. This APP contains bullet databases, and allows you enter key information, such as muzzle speed, bullet BC (bullet diameter), zero distance, velocity and environmental factors. Gun-specific factors include scope height over bore, barrel twist rate and more. The video explains how to create “range cards” and how to view these with your Elite Ballistics enabled Kestrel. John says: “The app is great because it eliminates the need to fiddle around with the Kestrel buttons.” The APP makes it much easier to change settings and enter data.

This Part III video demonstrates how to determine the true wind direction by aligning SIDE of the unit with the wind. Set the unit at 90 degrees to the direction of the wind to make the impeller run as slowly as possible. After you have set your target range (See 3:03), you can get precise come-ups (10.28 MOA here for 559 yards). The Kestrel calculates the crosswind correction (see 3:12).
