May 30th 2023Inertial trigger is a great, low-cost upgrade for LabRadarsSUMMARY This article reviews a gadget that “triggers”, the LabRadar Chronograph to register bullet speeds. This $35 JKL inertial trigger is activated by the instantaneous pulse of the rifle recoil when a shot has been fired, rather than sound or Doppler. Our tester, who had some frustrations with his LabRadar while shooting at a range that had reflective surfaces, now reports that his LabRadar chrono equipped the JKL inertial trigger is capturing 100% of his actual shot. He will not use his LabRadar anymore without it. This inertial LabRadar Trigger has also been a hit with other users. It is affordable and works great. It’s not perfect. The majority of complaints come from users who complain that their LabRadars don’t always record all shots fired in a row. This may not be a problem for the average plinker. But for serious shooters trying to do ladder tests or load development requiring all shots to be reported, it can be frustrating when a shot is missed.Traditionally, LabRadar has recommended trying different settings that compensate for the gap between the unit and muzzle as well as well as having different options for how the unit recognizes a shot fired. These options may work to a certain extent, but they are not a guarantee, especially if you shoot at ranges that have concrete baffles, walls or roofs that can affect sound waves. It is true that nobody can explain exactly why shots are lost in certain circumstances. The default system can also pick up stray rifle shots. Many shooters are not willing to give up this sophisticated chronograph and have sought out a foolproof solution to prevent such failures. For this shooter, frustration was so high, that he sold his first LabRadar, and switched to another chronograph, before buying another LabRadar a year or two later. I bought another LabRadar only after vowing that I would find a way to get the LabRadar to work every time, every shot. JKL Inertial Trigger – Outstanding Product that Works Great
Enter the JKL Gen 2 Trigger. This is a simple, inertial trigger that activates by the recoil from your gun. The unit is a small pad with a long audio cord attached. You simply plug in the audio cord and attach the pad with Velcro to your gun. You must then (and this is important) change the LabRadar Trigger settings from “Doppler to “Trigger”. The unit is easy to use and works well. The unit works no matter where it is placed on the stock. The recoil of each gun is different, so it is important to find a place that does not interfere with your shooting setup. This was a relief, as the LabRadar initially seemed to be fussy about where it was placed. Now I can put the LabRadar anywhere I want. As long as it is still near my gun, and pointed at the target properly, I get consistent data.
The JKL Inertial trigger can be faulty if you use it aggressively or with a lot of force. These are easy to spot in your data because the speed value will be much lower than the actual fired shot values. You can ignore or remove the low entry. Once you’re used to the inertial trigger, this “bump” activation doesn’t happen as often.
Bottom line: If you own a LabRadar then you should definitely purchase a JKL inertial trigger. This device is priced at only $35.00, but it is one of the best accessories for the LabRadar. I’ve recommended inertial triggers for dozens of shooters. All of the guys who bought a JKL Trigger say they couldn’t imagine using their LabRadars without one. If you’re a LabRadar fan but are frustrated by shots that don’t get recorded 100% of the times, then a JKL inertial trigger is for you. It transforms a good system to an amazing system. JKL Industries claims that its inertial triggering “will work with anything from a.22 LR system to a suppressed or standard rifle and brake.”
