The New Year, 2024, is only 15 hours away as we release this article (East Coast Time). You may have been waiting for the big day, buying champagne and sparklers to celebrate the New Years. Hopefully, 2024 will be much better than 2023, a tough year with inflation, the border crisis, conflict in the Mid-East, ongoing war in Ukraine, and shocking incompetence/corruption in Washington. We expect that many people will open a champagne bottle to celebrate the dawn of 2024 and hope for a better year. You can pop the cork in the traditional manner, or you can read on to learn how to release celebratory champagne using a rifle shot as demonstrated by Kirsten Joy Weiss. We were recently shown how to open a Champagne bottle at Thorton Winery, a champagne winery in Temecula California. We were told to hold the bottle at an angle and rotate the BOTTLE slowly, while holding the cork. It works well… but not as impressive as the way Kirsten Joy Weiss, a sharpshooter, opens a bottle.
Kirsten Joy Weiss, a former smallbore rifle competitor and ace trigger puller, tried a New Year’s trick shot several seasons ago. Kirsten tried to shoot the champagne cork out of a bottle in the festive spirit of the New Year. After several unsuccessful attempts, she was able to hit the cork at least twice. The cork, however, did not fly. She hit the cork but it didn’t release. It was a surprise…
Kirsten was not deterred and changed her strategy to aim for the neck of bottle. This is the same as “sabering”, a method to release the bubbly from a champagne bottle by cutting off the end of its neck with a knife. Kirsten blew off the top by aiming for the neck of a bottle. (It seems that the pressure inside the champagne bottle is what does the majority of the work when “sabering”.
