March 5, 2022. What’s next to a stockpile full of shiny, newly-loaded ammo, but not as good? A movie that shows how freshly loaded ammo is made from start to finish can be your next best option. Below is a five-minute video showing the ammunition production process at Independence’s Army Ammunition Plant. The largest producer of small arms ammunition in the U.S. military is Lake City, which produces approximately four MILLION small-caliber cartridges every day. It is still fascinating to see the creation of cartridges, from the drawing (or extrusion of raw brass into casings to placement of projectiles or primers) of ammunition.
Lake City Army Ammunition Plant is a 3,935-acre facility that is government-owned and contractor-operated in Independence, Missouri. It was established in 1941 by Remington Arms to produce small caliber ammunition for U.S. Army. The facility has been in continuous operation for five years, except for a 5-year period after World War II. From its inception, Remington Arms ran the plant until 1985. From 1985 to 2000, Winchester took control of the facility. Orbital-ATK had been operating the plant since late2000 under the initial name Alliant Techsystems. Recently, Olin Corporation announced that Olin Winchester, LLC, its ammunition division, was selected by the U.S Army to manage and operate the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant over the next seven years.
