A magazine reload under pressure can make a difference in a gun fight

According to SIG Sauer however, not only is it important to have a spare magazine, but so is running out of ammo. FBI data shows that defensive shootings typically only count three rounds fired in a fight. Why should we have an extra mag?

SIG explained that the real reason to keep an extra magazine on hand is to prevent gun malfunctions. “Pistol magazines are durable and will wear down no matter what gun you have. Feed lips and followers can wear, springs can lose their strength, and the magazine can become dented or damaged from training. Regular inspection of your firearm before you use it is part of gun ownership.

SIG stated that unlike a car, a magazine doesn’t have a check engine light to indicate it’s time for maintenance. It will stop working, and in a defensive situation, there is no worse sound than the click of the trigger without any bang. Simple checks like moving the follower up or down to make sure it works, or checking for carbon buildup, will help ensure your pistol works properly every time.

Train with a Spare magazine

Your EDC should contain the primary magazine. Many people choose the smaller mag, which is less likely to be concealed. Your backup magazine can be used to increase your payload. You can either carry a magazine pouch on your belt or a pocket magazine carrier. Keep your magazines in good condition. It should always be kept in the same place as your training.

Make sure your gun is kept clean and in good condition. SIG recommends that you lubricate your gun regularly and that you replace the recoil spring after 3,000 rounds. Get some training. SIG Sauer Academy classes like the one shown in the video teach the finer points and how to take immediate and corrective actions. Everyone wants to shoot and we understand that. However, it is important to know how to keep the gun running and to train hard.
