This 48-minute Shooting USA TV video features long-range varmint silhouette contests in Texas, the Lone Star State. These matches are a lot of fun and we have been to them on the West Coast. This sport combines the accuracy of benchrest competition with fun of destroying critter targets. These silhouettes are smaller than standard ones, so it can be quite challenging to hit them at 300 yards or beyond.
John Scoutten, host of this episode, competes with his 6.5 Creedmoor PRS gun. At 385 meters, he found that 1-MOA Coyotes provided plenty of challenge. Benchrest-grade rifles are used by most shooters with premium front rests.

EDITOR: We recommend that you watch this Shooting USA video. It features top-flight benchrest rifles and covers the history of Pennsylvania’s benchrest varmint silhouette. AccurateShooter Forum members are also featured on the screen. John Scoutten does a great job explaining the challenges involved in shooting this discipline using a PRS rig. This video is a great one for tactical shooters and benchrests.
Travis Frazier, who designed steel targets for Field & Cave Outfitters says shooters love reactive targets. “The most exciting part is seeing your hits — these targets really go airborne,” he said. Varmint Silhouette matches are all about instant gratification. These steel targets are designed and manufactured by Travis.
Texas matches feature multiple target shapes. 10 at each distance. Tiny Prairie Dogs at 200m; 3?x3? Armadillos at 300m; 3?x5? Coyotes at 385m, 5?x4? 500m for hogs; 600 yards for chickens (on swingers); and 750 yards for pigs (on swingers). Each set of targets is open to competitors for 10 rounds and 10 minutes.
